Tip & How-To about Garden

Save your self some starting trouble.

Aside from changing the oil in your lawn mower, to prevent hard starts and possible complications in the future, regularly check the air filter.

Its an often over looked wearable part that can cause a bit of aggravation when starting, and possible rough running.

You want to make sure that it is not clogged with debris and not extremely dirty. You can have a fairly new filter or machine, but if its dusty, or dry where you mow, it can clog up fast.

When your air filter becomes clogged, it inadvertently chokes the engine causing it to pull too much gas into the engine which leads to flooding of the engine, and the engine not running as well or as efficiently.

In most cases the dirt can be cleaned out if the filter is not really old, and not intensely soiled.

So if your mower seems to be harder to start and it is recent, check the filter. You may be surprised.

Battery required? Charge battery or replace. Replace air filter and spark plug. Dump out old oil and replace with 30w oil. Electric start may have a fuse blown. Dump out old gas fill with new with Stabile always added to gas. Try spraying starter spray in carb at air cleaner with filter removed. All mowers have a low oil sensor to prevent starting on low oil. Remove bowl from carb, should be full of gas. Pinch off fuel line with pliers or turn fuel valve off. Check float should be hanging down allowing fuel flow. Float up stops fuel flow.

My lawn mower will start then it will die after a few seconds, what could be the problem

If the mower was tipped it is quite possible oil from the engine has traveled up the breather and soaked the air filter in oil, this would richen the engine up and stop it running, remove the air filter and check for oil saturation.
