Almost all NETGEAR routers can be configured via browser based web administration GUI. You can access this interface by accessing the IP address (which by default will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 unless you have changed it. You may refer to the manual of your router to know the default IP address) of the router on a web browser.

If you are unable to access the administration GUI, possible Causes & Solutions are:

  • No Network connection with the Router: Verify IP address and default gateway information as described later on this article to confirm network connection
  • Browser Cache or other browser issues: Clear browser cache and/or restore default settings for the browser.
  • Reset the router.

  • How to verify network connection between the computer and NETGEAR Router:

    1. Connect the desktop to the LAN port on the router. Do not connect the modem to the router yet (to prevent in case of double NAT).

Also, Make sure that there are no USB cables connecting the modem directly to the computer.
    2. Click Start and then click Run. Type CMD and press Enter.

    3. On the command prompt, type IPCONFIG and press enter. This will display your computer's IP address information:

    • If your computer has more than one network interface, you will see multiple adapters listed here.
    • Check the IP address information for the adapter which is connected to the NETGEAR router.
If the IP address for the corresponding adapter is 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.x.x, this indicates that your computer is not able to communicate with the router. You should check your network configuration (and wireless settings in case of wireless adapter). If you are unable to obtain an IP address despite correct network configuration, try to reset the router and retry.
    • If the adapter connected to the NETGEAR router displays "Media disconnected", check the physical connection (ethernet cable incase of a wired connection, wireless settings incase of a wireless adapter).

    4. NETGEAR router's IP address is the default gateway address of the network adapter connected to the router.
Try to access the router interface using the default gateway address. In this case - access http://192.168.0.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm on your browser.

    5. You will be prompted for username and password to access the interface. By default the username is admin, and the default password is password unless you have changed it.

    6. If you are still unable to access the administration interface, Disable any firewall software (including Windows firewall) and try again. If possible use a different computer to access the router interface.

    How to verify Browser Settings:
Note: Following troubleshooting information applies to Internet Explorer.
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click on Tools on the top menu and go to Internet options.

    3. On the General tab, click on Delete Cookies and then click on Delete Files (this will only delete all the temporary internet files).

    4. Click on Advanced tab on the top menu and click on the Restore Defaults button.

    5. Click OK and close Internet Explorer.
    Reset your router:
If the above troubleshooting steps did not solve your issue or none of the computers connected to the router have connectivity, you can try resetting the router.
Resetting your router will erase all configuration and restore it to factory defaults. You must note down all configuration parameters so that you can re-configure the router after restoring to default values.
    • The reset button is located at the back of the NETGEAR router. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
    • Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds.

    • Wait for a minute or two for the router to reboot after reset and then check your connectivity to the router. After the reset, you will have to reconfigure your router - including Internet and Wireless configuration.
