How do I fix when I touch a key to put in information and it prints a different number or letter than the one touched

Here is a way to recalibrate the touchscreen without having to go through the menus:

If your Nuvi has the problem that when you press one key but another key is highlighted, then either your touchscreen is defective or it is miscalibrated.

For example, pressing the letter "A" on the QWERTY keypad, actually highlights the letter "S" or "Q" or "Z". On the non-QWERTY keypad, this may show up as "B".

Method #1: If you can get to the main menu, press the "wrench/tools" icon and then the "Display" icon. Now press the calibrate screen button and go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Method # 2: Follow this procedure if you can't get to the main menu or any menu thereafter.

First, turn the unit OFF.

Nuvi 3xx & 6xx Series: Hold down the on/off power button and don't let go of it.

On the screen it will say "Pre-boot mode"..... keep holding the button down..... after some time you will eventually come to a screen with dots. If the screen says "Loading" and does not go to to the calibration screen with the dots, you will need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable and rename the file "GUPDATE.GCD" within the Garmin directory to "GUPDATE.OLD". Once the file has been renamed, repeat the above procedure.

Once you reach the calibration screen, now you can let off of the on/off power button. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 2xx/2xxW Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold until you see the calibration screen. Note: Some 2xxW models require the procedure below for the 7xx.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Touch the screen anywhere and keep your finger there while moving the on/off switch to left (don't wait for Garmin logo to come up) and then quickly moving the switch the right (lock position). After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 8xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Remove the battery from the Nuvi for at least 10 seconds. Press and hold your finger on screen, while putting the battery back in. The Nuvi will boot-up and you should see the text "Pre-boot Mode" appear on the screen. Continue pressing on the screen until pre-boot goes away and the progress bar appears. Now remove your finger. After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, 14xx, 16xx, 24xx, 25xx Series: Turn off the Nuvi. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then push down on the power button to turn the unit on. Release the power button when the Garmin logo appears. Continue to press on the upper left-hand corner of the screen until you see the calibration screen.

Once completed the Nuvi will display Calibration Complete

This will recalibrate your touchscreen to the LCD display.

If this doesn't resolves your problem. then your touchscreen may be defective.

Froze on garmin screen won't give directions

Could be a battery problem not having enough charge to get past the Garmin screen you might need to replace the battery or it might need to be reset.

Not knowing which model of Garmin it is makes it hard to provide a correct solution. ?

If your Garmin Nuvi 1300 is freezing up or not working correctly, a soft reset can be performed. A soft reset unfreezes the unit and brings you back to the main menu. If a soft reset does not solve the problem, or if you are selling your unit and wish to erase all of your saved information, a hard reset can be done. A hard reset restores the original factory settings to the unit. Once the information is deleted, it can not be restored. Turn on the Garmin Nuvi 1300. Press and hold down the "Power" button. Release the button when the main menu is displayed. The unit is now ready to be used. b> Hard Reset b> Turn the Garmin Nuvi 1300 off. Press your finger against the bottom-right corner of the Garmin display screen. Leave your finger in place as you power the unit on. Release your finger when the display screen asks, "Do you want to erase all user data?" Use your finger to tap "Yes." The unit will begin to reboot. Do not use the unit until the main menu is displayed. The reset process should take about 45 seconds. Hope this helps.

Device: Garmin Nuvi 660 NA. After power on, nuvi boots thru to the "Where to" page. On the prior page, the touchscreen will not click "Enter" but after a time delay, nuvi proceeds to the "Where to" page. All items on the page will not respond to touch entries; therefore, the calibration page cannot be reached. Tried "PreBoot", holding power switch down: Cannot reach calibration page. Tried removing (delete) file "gupdate.gcd", "PreBoot" does allow access to the calibration page, but depressing the dot does not respond, irrespective of how long dot is pressed. Tried updating the device software: No success. Tried removing the "gupdate.gcd" file from updated software: No success after depressing the dot. Battery is fully charged. Where do we go from here? Garmin declared no support since it is an outdated device. Richard Okita Honolulu, HI

*Master reset your Garmin Device:

1.Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power;

2.Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil

3.Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON

4.Release the power button when the device powers ON

5.You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?

6.Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays - Touch Yes

7.The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nuvi .

*If the touchscreen is incorrectly detecting where your finger touches the screen, the screen may need to be calibrated.

1.Power the unit On.From the Where to? and View map screen, touch Settings . Touch Display>Touch Re-calibrate

2.A new screen will display that says Press Dot,Touch the Center of the Dot.

>Keep touching the center of the dot as it moves around the screen.

3.When Calibration Complete appears on the screen, please touch OK.

The screen will now be Re-calibrated.

*If the screen is not responding to touch, the device may not have enough power to function properly. Recharge the battery completely and try again. If the battery does not charge, it may need to be replaced.

If the screen is still not responding to touch commands or displaying properly, the display may need to be replaced. If sound comes from the device, it is likely the motherboard is working, and only the display needs to be replaced.

Refer to:Garmin Nuvi 660 Screen Replacement Guide

Before replacing the display, check that the ribbon cables connecting the display to the motherboard are connected securely.

Keep your finger pressed until the popup window appears. Touch Yes to clear all user data. All original settings are restored.Your recent selections and audible bookmarks are also deleted.
