Tip & How-To about Pool & Spa

Swimming pool turning green pump quit stopped working QUICK FIX

You can use a small submersible/sump pump to keep the water moving to keep the pool from turning green, keeps pool clear for weeks, allowing time for pump/motor repair, just drop it in the pool and plug it in, no timer needed. I loan these out for free to my customers. THESE can be found at Harbor Freight PLEASE Write back and tell me your story about how this little trick saved you a bunch of money. A green pool can cost around $300 in chemicals to get back clear again. FYI ! you might have a friend or a neighbor that has one you can borrow.

I added salt and am running just the pump for 24 hrs per instructions but when I turn the thing at top of pump to release no water comes out. Is this normal??

i am not completely familliar with this system but i am pretty sure that opening the relief valve should allow water to exit providing all the valves are open. as for green pool, if the water is not moving, you will not be able to clear the water.

pump continuosly runs after water is cleared out of basin

The problem is with the float switch. I have attached the manual. There is probably something keeping the float from falling back down. Check you sump basin and make sure nothing (including the power cord) is interfering with float.

how do I install a dry well in my in ground pool

To install a drywell(or sump pit) you will need to dig a hole beside the pool(usually les than 3' from the pool wall or in the same backfill material as close to the the overdig for the pool as possible. The goal here is to get down the the bottom of the pool wall in the backfill material so you can access the ground water that is accumulating around the pool to pump it out. Dig a large enough hole that you can install either clay tile, "Big O", 8" plastic pipe or something that will allow you to lower a submersible pump down and pump the ground water out. Keep in mind that it will be perminently in the ground and needs to hold back the surrounding soil or backfill. It's a good idea to drill several holes around the pipe as well as up a few feet from the bottom to allow for the water to pass into the pipe. Lower the pipe into the hole you've dug, fill the outside with clear gravel to the just below the top of the pipe then lay some filter cloth on this stone. Top it off sixth some soil and cover the pipe opening with your choice of either a decorative patio stone or flagstone. It's a good idea to peek inside the pit weekly to pump out any water. Especially in the spring and fall when the pool has been shut down for the year if your in a climate that this is necessary

After I vacuum the pool, backwash it and then turn the filter system back on it blows in a lot of green water back into the pool. What should I do?

1st Green water is algee. Kill the algee in the pool. 2nd when you're finished backwashing the filter. Stop pump and move valve handle to rinse position. Then restart pump. Run in rinse mode until glass is clear. Then stop pump again, and move lever to filter position. When you're backwashing, you're reversing the flow of the water through the filter. When you switch directly back to filter, anything left loose in the filter flows back to the pool. When you select rinse, it reverses the flow back to normal, but keeps the water going to the waste outlet until clear, that way that green puff of water will go out the drain.
