Tip & How-To about Bernina Sewing Machines

Bernina 830 Record Oil Diagram

Diagram of oil ports on a Bernina 830 Record sewing machine. Use only fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube. One or two drops each oil port. Oil every 40 hours of use, every time before a new project is begun, every six months in storage. If the levers/dials begin to get sluggish, gently wiggle each and apply lube where metal rubs against metal (do not oil metal cams, belts, plastic). Directing heated air from a handheld hairdryer will help the penetrant to distribute quicker and loosen it.

Where is the feed dog lever on my bernina record 830 sewing machine

On the Bernina 830 Record (older mechanical model), it is usually the very bottom knob on the right side (directly below the Stitch Length Lever). It should turn right or left about a quarter turn to switch between feed dogs up or down. If the knob is frozen, then it has seized due to old dried oil (a common occurrence with older mechanical machines that have not been serviced regularly). Stuck feed dogs, stitch selectors, buttonhole knobs, and the handwheel are some of the most frequent victims of seizure. However, with lots of patience, time, fresh good quality sewing machine oil or liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube, elbow grease and a handheld hairdryer, these issues can usually be successfully addressed.

My Bernina 830 will not switch stitches. It says the number but shows straight stitch and sews straight stitch

Is it a new 830 computerized model or the older 830 Record mechanical?

If it is the 830 Record, it needs oiling--1-2 drops of good quality sewing machine oil (specifically concentrate on the stitch selector lever and oil the metal parts that move against other metal parts) Do NOT oil the cams, plastic gears, any rubber parts, ie belts, bobbin winder wheel.

What kind of oil do I use for a bernina 830 record electronic

I agree with Tally Girl in using a good quality, preferably clear, light machine oil. Do NOT use 3-in-one or cooking oil as both will become "varnished" over time leading to a gummed up machine. I have been repairing both commercial ad domestic sewing machines for 45 years.
