Tip & How-To about Miscellaneous

Repair stretched elastic jacket ribbing

Stretched elastic ribbing is expensive to replace, often more than the jacket cost new.
To restore stretch back into ribbing simply :
1) Cut a small hole either end of the ribbing
2) Thread a length of 5.0 mm elastic chord of the correct color and length. Length should be enough to provide a comfortable amount of elasticity.
3) Sew or secure either end of the elastic chord to the main body of the jacket.
4) Sew several small hem loops to secure the elastic chord to the downward internal edge of the elastic ribbing.
5) Try on jacket and adjust if required.
This won't replace the elastic ribbing appearance, but looks as close as you can get at the right price.

Is there a way to shrink wall-to-wall carpeting which has stretched. It is installed over warm but not hot radiant heat in floor.

No, but you can fix it. You lift it up on the side where it has stretched, cut it to the new length required, then stretch it back and fit to the clips along the wall. If it has stretched over a large area, you may need to lift it up on 2 or 3 sides, cut and reattached. To stretch it back to fit it, you need carpet layer knee pads, so if you don't want to buy them, the easiest way is to get a carpet layer to do this for you. It is a small quick job so shouldn't cost much, although you may have trouble getting someone to do a small job like this.

Can a Bissell belt fit on a Hoover vacuum cleaner?

If it is a stretch belt It may fit but if it is not the right size or has lost elasticity it will not work properly. If it is a clogged or ribbed belt or a serpentine style belt you must use he correct belt. Stretch belts are hard to install because they must be stretched to almost twice their original length to be installed. After a few months it will lose much of its elasticity a slip on the brush roll when cpvacuuming carpet. The brush roll is the most important part on a vacuum if using it on carpets. A tight belt is crucial to the brush roll spinning fast and not slipping which is why belts must be replaced at least twice per year.

Can leg warmers be used as arm warmers too?

Yes. It is not what they are meant for and it will look a bit odd, but you definitely can do it if you like it.
If it helps, you can also make little holes for your thombs so that it will look a bit more like an arm warmer.

will not open fully, only 3/4 of the way

There are 4 elastic bands inside the top that pull certain roof support bars back...much like a set of vertical blinds that need all slats moving together at the same angle. If the elastic bands are stretched & worn out... a bar going across the roof (side-to-side) stays forward and does not let the roof go back. This happened to mine. My mechanic taught me how to do the manual procedure (also in the owner's manual) but I also had to move that bar myself toward the back of the car in order for it to fold down back in it's bay. I took it to the dealer and he had an upholstery guy reach in and replace the 2 outer elastic bands for a nominal fee. He could not replace the 2 middle elastic bands without tearing the roof material apart. But the top works fine for now. He said it should last about a year or so before the bands stretch out again. He also said to put the top up and down at least once every 2 weeks to keep it functioning properly. When the top is up (over you head) the bands are fully stretched.... they are relaxed when the top is down.
