How to choose the best wireless router?

Choosing the best wireless router for setting up your home network is always a terrible task. There are thousands or even more routers arriving to the market each year. most of them are from well-known brands such as Linksys, D-Link, TP-Link, ASUS, etc. Which one is the best? Which one to avoid? If you don't know the answer, you should read this article where I am going to give you some tips for choosing the best Wifi router.

Always make sure that it fits your Requirements

The first thing you have to consider when buying a router is that it fits your requirements or not. If you are a gamer who buying the router just for the online gaming and streaming requirements, a basic wireless router will not fit you well. So, be sure to ask yourself the question whenever you see a router. "Does it fit my needs?"

Fit in your Budget

Don't wish something beyond your budget. Always make sure that the selected device fits your budget. In the case of routers too, the fact is no different. Let's say you only have around $100 in your hand. So, always do the search like "Best wireless routers under $100."

Choose a Good Brand

Choosing a good brand is very crucial. We can't risk our hard earned money by buying some product from a newbie brand. So, always make sure that the brand of the router is well established and had good days in the business. Some of the best router brands include.
  • Cisco
  • D-Link
  • TP-Link
  • ASUS
  • Netgear, etc.

Make sure that no additional Modem is Required

There are few routers available which requires an additional modem to operate. For example, the Apple AirPort router need an extra modem to function. It is an extra cost for you. So, make sure that your router is a combo of both the modem and a router. Luckily most of the modern-day routers from the above listed brands are coming with both of them in a single piece.

Don't go behind Design

Design is something very unuseful. The performance is what matters. So, don't buy a router by seeing the robotic design or a cute puppy on top. Always go behind the quality of the product and the features they included inside it. But yes, there are few routers which has both good design and quality hardware. So, be wise to choose them.

Good luck in choosing the best wireless router. Alternatively hear are few other topics you can have a look at. It might be useful.

Hi,

I do not recommend that you use WEP for security as this is no longer a secure method for wireless network.

Setting up a wireless network can be a bit tricky at times, but if you follow this step by step guide for Linksys routers, you will have your wireless network up and secure in no time.
It will walk you through resetting the wireless router and quickly setting up a securing your network.

password protection

When you perform the router setup, by logging on to the router (http://192.168.1.1 user name admin password is blank [just press Enter key]) Complete the "wireless" section, choosing the SSID or name of the router on the network, security option (I use WPA-PSK [TKIP] as the password rules are easy to use. Once this pass code is set, the only way to access the router will be to know this word. If one does not know this passphrase, the router will be unusable. Every computer you want to allow access to will need the correct passphrase at connection.
This works for pretty much any wireless router, except the login parameters. Best of luck to you!

Are you trying to set up router ?
You can set up your router manually, without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

Router lock

Setting up your wireless network to encrypt the data so intruders can't see it involves choosing from several methods. Take a look at pages 49-55 of this on-line manual (link below). It will give you more information than you ever wanted to know about choosing an encryption method and entering the "keys" on your router. If you find this terribly confusing, just choose either WEP64 or WEP128 and ignore the other sections. There are specific notes for MAC users on pages 53 and 55. Hope this helps!

Two separate solutions are needed.

First, you will need to ask your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to assign a "fixed IP address" to your Internet connection. Your ISP typically assigns addresses to home users out of a large "pool" of addresses that are shared among several customers. Because of this, your home network address is not always the same. Most ISP's charge an extra fee to always keep your address the same.

The second task is to configure the firewall function in your router so it will pass connections through from the WAN to the device inside your network. The procedure to do this should be included in the instruction manual for your router.
