Tip & How-To about Cooking

Money saving meals

If you are thinking of making a spaghetti sauce, don't just make enough for a meal , make enough for 5 meals &I just freeze the rest in meal size portions. This makes it easy on those days where you just can't find the get up & go??

can I freeze a cooked ham

Yes you can. you can freeze anything once it has a cooking process to kill bacteria. My advice would be to slice it and wrap it in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and then pack it in 'sandwich portions'. You can also serve the slices hot with parsley sauce as a dinner meal.

can you freeze pasta sauce

Yes. I do this all the time. I make my own or sometimes freeze jar sauce if there is more than i can use at one meal. I use zipper freezer bag from quarts to gallons depending on the quantity I intend to use at a given meal. be sure the sauce is cooled completely before bagging. I let mine cool to room temperatre (if i made my own) or pour the remainder of the jar or can directly into a bag. Be sure to label and date the product. Be specific if you plan to freeze a variety of sauces as I do.

Hoisin sauce is a Chinese sauce that is quite thick and sweet and is used to flavor dishes such as noodles, beef and stir fries. It's salty and sweet and can really add character to a dish but not everybody likes it as it's very strong.

the small white clip that keeps the nozzle cage dowmn is broken. Can i get it replaced?

Mine broke too.. I contacted Seal-a-meal, and for my machine, they don't make replacement parts anymore. BUT, here's what I did and it works great. I place a chopstick across the length of the lock and seal nozzle...I use a little scotch-tape to hold it in place.. When you shut the lid, it applies enough pressure to the nozzle, to start pulling air out of the bags. I do have to lean or push down hard on the lid, to get it to lock into place, before sealing, but the chopstick works wonderful...I am not going to buy a whole new seal-a-meal when this works so terrific. In fact, I just seal-a-mealed 8 bags of beans this afternoon. Try it before you go out and buy another machine.
