Tip & How-To about GE Refrigerators

Fix for fridge freezing food

It's common to have a problem with food freezing in your fridge. Many times The source of this problem is the damper assembly that channels cold air from the freezer in to the refrigerator. on my GE profile fridge it was the damper door that broke away from the motor that controls it. you can do a search and find the parts and the easy fix for this problem but I decided not to spend $100 on the part and try to fix the actual problem. I decided to use a hot air gun to fuse the door back on the part that connects to the motor and so far its working well. I have a youtube video that explains this in better detail.

Hello,
Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for. Good luck in solving the problem...

My fridgedaire side by side freezer's condensor is freezing over and warming the fridge side, I defrosted it the fridge side is keep cool enough to keep food but the freezer side will not get cold to freeze items nor make ice. The fan for the evaporator works but the ice maker no longer turns I thought it might be the thermostat but I just wanted to get some advice before trying to fix it myself or calling a repairman

Fridge keeps on freezing everything inside of it

This refrigerator only has one thermostat located in the fresh food compartment it is designed to activate the sealed system (cooling) until it reaches approximately 37 deg f in the fresh food compartment. The damper controls how fast the cold air can move from the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment. Allowing you to control the temp in the freezer by controlling the flow of cold air to the thermostat.

You have one of two problems.
#1 your thermostat is no longer opening when it achieves set temp. fix = replace thermostat pn 61005798 $35
#2 your damper arm or assemblie has broken. Fix = Replace damper or broken arm and actuator.
damper assembly pn12001377 $44
damper actuator pn 61002000 $2
damper arm pn 61001999 $2
