Air To Water Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger

General Information
Air to water heat pipe heat exchanger is mainly to heat water using the hot air from heat recovery, it can be used for domestic water, water for boilers or production process. The exchanger is constructed using a partition in the middle to separate the exchanger, both sides are independently sealed. A single heat pipe can be replaced. While working the hot air flows from one side to the other side, the heat pipe absorbs heat. Meanwhile, cold water flows from the reverse side, the heat pipe releases heat, thus heating the cold water from the reverse side. The outlet temperature is not lower than dew temperature.

Saunier Duval ISOFAST F35E on hot water only makes a noise like a motor bike that vibrates through the pipework, this does not happen when the central heating is on, any ideas as to the cause.


The water pipes (steel) are probably full of rust. The noise is air in the pipes.
Use the pressure relief valve to let air escape.
The risk is if the relief valve is old it may not shut off.
Also air will build up again

You burn wood, and smoke goes up flueway.
You're not running chimney smoke through ductwork so you have a heat exchanger.
What kind of heat exchanger?
probably air since you're running through ductwork?
How much hot air or hot water is coming off heat exchanger?
How big of a space can be heated with that amount of heat?
Is the exchanger located in optimal location?

Considerations.
One room log cabin with fireplace will not stay very warm.
One room house with big wood burning stove in center, with hot flue pipe running across the room and exiting on far wall, will get warm-hot, but will cool off fast.
Why?
Because the BTU output of firewood is much less than electric, coal, oil, or gas.
Otherwise they would have made wood-burning steam locomotives. But the locomotive boiler cannot get hot enough with wood ... the boiler needs coal to produce enough BTUs to boil water fast enough to rotate the turbine and turn the wheels.

Maybe your wood stove output should be measured.
Don't forget a huge percentage of fire heat goes straight up flueway.

taps get hot water the rads dont


The Tap water comes from a Domestic water heater. The radiators are heated from a separate source, usually a boiler of some kind. Follow the piping back to that source and see if it is heating. Next, if it has a pump it should be running. Last, look for air bleed ports on each radiator and bleed out any air in them. If nothing comes out when bleeding, air or water, look around the boiler for a water valve and add water till all the radiators are full. David,

The fact that you're getting a little burst of domestic hot water suggests that the boiler is capable of circulating hot primary loop water through the heat exchanger, but doesn't necessarily do so when it needs to.

What seems to be lacking is a recognition that domestic hot water is now being drawn off, and that the boiler needs to fire up and divert the primary flow through the heat exchanger.

A good place to start might be the flow switch (usually in the bottom of the boiler, where the cold water supply comes in) or the electrical connections to it.
