Tip & How-To about Dell 1815dn All-In-One Laser Printer

Dell MFP 1815DN loses time, clock stops when off

When the printer is turned off, the real time clock seems to stop. It does not forget the time, the time just stops.
There is a three cell NiMH battery under the control panel. It is bad in my printer.
Replacing it seems to fix the issue. The battery is marked "VARTA PHONEPOWER NHT 3.6 V Ni-MH BATTERY Made in Germany"
It measures about 10 mm thick by about 48 mm across.

There seem to be similar batteries on the market that are CTB01-BP1 or CTB04-BP1 (although the cable may be too short and the connector wrong!).
I uses three tabbed NiMH AAA cells and grabbed the cable off the existing pack.
There is room to duct tape the cell under the front panel (under and a little back of the "DELL" logo in the middle of the control panel.

To remove the control panel, you can follow the instructions here:
http://www.refurbisheddellprinters.com/content/manuals/service/Dell%201815dn%20Service%20Manual.pdf
Section 5-4 on page 39 shows removing the Rear Cover.
Section 5-6 on page 44 shows the side cover removal.
Then section 5-7 (Scanner Assembly) step 7 (page 47) shows removal of the
front panel (the "OPE Unit").
I skipped the Rear Cover removal and was able to get the front panel off with
a little bending of the side covers, this may or may not work well for you.
If you are not comfortable with servicing lots of stuff, stick with the instructions
mentioned above. If you want something simpler, and can gauge risk of when
the tabs on the side panels might fail, here's the simpler instructions I used:

I took out the four screws in 5-6 step 2 and 4.
Pop the side panels out about 1/4 inch just along the front edges.
Follow 5-7 step 7, first loosening the front, then note that you need to use something like a screwdriver
to lift the OPE sides out (put the screwdriver tip just under the bottom edge
of the OPE plastic about 1 inch back from the front and push the OPE edge out [away from
the middle of the OPE]). The OPE is latched on the sides and front.
Releasing the front first lets the side pop up when it is release.
The front of the OPE will then swing upwards (but it is a tight squeeze past
the side covers). After swinging it up maybe 60 degrees, it can be pulled
forward free of the tabs at the back of the OPE. You might be able to change
the battery without pulling the OPE forward.

Change the battery, and reverse the way you opened it to reassemble.
You may lose settings and need to reinitialize the unit.

Note that the battery is only charged when the power switch is on.

Hi - My Intermatic T101P3 timer motor stops after it turns off the pool pump. I have one start and one stop time in a 24 hr period. I have to manually start the pump at the timer in the morning, adjust the dial to set the correct time, and then it runs fine until it hits the stop time again at night, and then seems to hang (motor seems to stop). I repeat the manual process to start the pump again in the morning. The timer is relatively new (~ 1 year old). Thanks very much...

Sounds like the clock leads are on the wrong posts, or at least the hot one is. If if was moved to the load side then manually starting the timer will also power up the clock motor. As soon as the clock trips the off timer, the pump and the clock motor are both off. Examine the clock leads to the wiring diagram inside the clock box cover to ensure they are connected correctly. I bet you'll find one of the wires is misplaced.

my air intake is huming

YOU HAVE SOMETHING CALLED AN IAC VALVE. REAL SHINY AND BOLTED TO THROTTLE BODY SIZE OF A D CELL BATTERY WITH A CONNECTOR SET AT A 90DEGREE AT END OF IT. TRY UNPLUGGING IT,ENGINE MAY DIE AND OK. USUALLY NOISE STOPS IF REAL BAD. IF STOPS YOU WILL KNOW FOR SURE THEN. AT THAT TIME JUST BUY ONE AND REPLACE IT AS IT COMES OFF,DON'T FORGET GASKET. MAY SET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON,USUALLY NOT BUT IF RECONNECT AND AFTER A FEW DRIVE CYCLES IT WILL TURN OFF IF IT'S OFF NOW.

What ports wind what?

On mine, the center one (@the 6 position) is the one that keeps the pendulum swinging. It is the one that lengthens the most during the week and if I forget to wind it, that pendulum is all the way down when the clock stops.
