Tip & How-To about Apple iPhone Cell Phones
So you purchased a used iPhone, you pay your money, the person disappears and you find the phone is asking for a 'code'.
It depends if it is a customer set passcode or a PUK code. Depends where you bought it and if it is stolen?
To remove the customer set passcode, you need to do a Factory Reset. On a computer, download iTunes. Although the program is called iTunes, it is your link to the phone and does a lot more that play your music. Set up Apple ID with user name and credit card details. You need to do this to get access to the App Store. Most apps are free, but you still need credit card details. Also gives access to iTunes so you can purchase music and videos, also more iCloud storage if you need it. Then connect the phone with the USB charging lead. Tell the iTunes program to Factory Reset. It will scrub everything of it including the passcode and put it back to the state it was when it was brand new, and also with the latest iOS operating system. The Factory Reset takes about 20 minutes. When it finishes, you work through a step by step wizard to set the phone up with your new Apple ID and password. Make sure you keep note of both as you need the password every time you download an app or music.
If it is asking for a PUK Code, the phone has been locked at firmware level using an encrypted key. This is put on by the company that have the contract for the phone you have just purchased, the cellular service provider of that phone. They only put the PUK Code on for a few reasons. Phone is stolen or reported stolen, default of payment before the agreed contract is paid up, or finally someone trying the consumer passcode 10 times unsuccessfully. The Code can only come from the cellular provider and is a 6 key number, so impossible to break.
There is a Tip of mine under my account that goes into PUK Codes in a lot more detail.

PUK code is called as PERSONNAL UNBLOCKING KEY.
Your phone will ask for PUK code when you entered the PIN
code wrongly several times depending upon the mobile make. The mobile asks for
PUK code so that unauthorized persons do not use your mobile for wrong cause.
To get PUK code please contact your service provider
through phone or go directly to their office. They will provide you the PUK
code for your mobile. The PUK code is unique for each mobile phone model.so
that you can open your phone. When you planning to call your service provider
you cannot use your mobile as it is fully locked. Please use some other mobile
with same network to call your service provider.
This PUK code prevents thieves from being able to make use
of stolen handsets, that is why it can only be given by the service provider
While you get the PUK code ,the service provider
customer care officer will ask for your personal details to check whether the
mobile belongs to you only. If they are satisfied with your answers they will
provide with the PUK code
