Tip & How-To about Kitchen Appliances - Others
If your Toaster's coils don't heat up and/or the lever doesn't stay down
Having looked for answers to this problem with no solutions, and admonitions about not doing the work yourself . . . I attempted to at least see what the problem might be.
Thinking there must be a fuse involved I unscrewed the outer cover of my Toastmaster T80BC 2-slice toaster (might not work on another model) from it's base and pulling off the lever knob to remove the outer cover, I then unplugged the connector from the control panel to the electro-mechanical portion of the toaster.
Looking over the Electro-mechanical portion, I realized that there is an electro-MAGNETIC (COIL) mechanism that holds the toast lever down until it reaches the set temperature and then releases it - the toast Pops up. The other thing I noticed was a set of contacts the were charred (burned) . . . This effectively cut off the power to both the coils AND the Electro Magnet.
Taking a piece of Fine emery cloth and cutting it to fit through a hole to the contacts I placed the cloth between the contacts and putting light pressure to close the contacts I dragged the emery cloth through the contacts a number of times
(4 - 6 times) to clean off the carbon. I then cleaned out all the crumbs throughout the toaster as best I could with various brushes and reassembled the toaster . . . and to my amazement . . .
IT WORKED ! ! !
I hope this will help MANY folks from buying a new toaster when such a simple procedure will save you the cost of a new one.
