Toaster One Type of Repair

If your Toaster's coils don't heat up and/or the lever doesn't stay down
Having looked for answers to this problem with no solutions, and admonitions about not doing the work yourself . . . I attempted to at least see what the problem might be.
Thinking there must be a fuse involved I unscrewed the outer cover of my Toastmaster T80BC 2-slice toaster (might not work on another model) from it's base and pulling off the lever knob to remove the outer cover, I then unplugged the connector from the control panel to the electro-mechanical portion of the toaster.
Looking over the Electro-mechanical portion, I realized that there is an electro-MAGNETIC (COIL) mechanism that holds the toast lever down until it reaches the set temperature and then releases it - the toast Pops up. The other thing I noticed was a set of contacts the were charred (burned) . . . This effectively cut off the power to both the coils AND the Electro Magnet.
Taking a piece of Fine emery cloth and cutting it to fit through a hole to the contacts I placed the cloth between the contacts and putting light pressure to close the contacts I dragged the emery cloth through the contacts a number of times
(4 - 6 times) to clean off the carbon. I then cleaned out all the crumbs throughout the toaster as best I could with various brushes and reassembled the toaster . . . and to my amazement . . .
I hope this will help MANY folks from buying a new toaster when such a simple procedure will save you the cost of a new one.

GE toaster model 169100. : the lever to toast won't stay down. I researched removing the base to clean the magnets, but not regular Phillips screws. Suggestions??

I have the same GE toaster and now my lever won\'t lock in place when I push it down to cook my toast. The handle does not pull off and when you turn the toaster over there are no screws to take the toaster apart. So I guess I have to say this is a disposable toaster but I am extremely bummed because it is beautiful and match decor and microwave that has the same color scheme as my toaster.

I wish companies would stop making cheap junk that doesn\'t last more then a few years.

Russell Hobbs 18140 Toaster The bread carrier will not stay down during toasting. Insert two slices of bread into bread carrier and push down to lock. The right hand side carrier does not stay down. The left hand carrier works as it should and pops up on its own once the bread is toasted. Have cleaned out crumb tray and looked for any obvious obstructions.

Constant use can lead to crumbs clogging the path of the lever. Try opening up the bottom panel, by pulling on the metal tab to release the plate (and crumbs!) over a trash can. Also try flipping the toaster upside down and, very gently, shaking the crumbs out. if that doesn't work, you can try checking the toaster's browning dial. This might be too low to activate the heating coil. Try dialing it up, and pushing the lever down again. I hope this helps. You can check our post on Best ways to use a Toaster oven. the left side of the toaster does not stay engaged...if I hold it down it heats up but it doesn't stay down ..it doesn't catch.

There are two printed circuit boards inside front of toaster - One PC board for each side. The circuit board on the side that won't latch down in the "toasting" position , is defective. Now, does anyone have access to a schematic for this toaster?

the toaster does not lock in the down position

I am having the same problem with mine. I have found that if I hold the lever down, it will stay down after the elements start to heat, and then pop up according to your dial number. This isn't a solution to the problem, but you can still use your toaster.

Toaster will not stay down in toast position

uh, don't think there's a good chance, you could try to send toaster in for repair, but buying a new toaster is probably cheaper.
