Tip & How-To about Garden

2 cycle engine out of time

Hello fellow lawn people.....BEWARE!!!!....if you have hit a rock or root with your" gas powered" mower it's possible you have changed the engines timing which could have a drastic result ....it happened to myself and required complete" knock me out"surgery to reset the bones and install steel pins in my hand resulting in 6 weeks off work.....what i've learned is... if the shaft that the blade connects to the engine has changed position ....due to striking a solid object....the engine could then possibly be put out of time and could possibly backfire while pulling the startpull cord .if this happens the pullcord could be rapidly retracted resulting in a serious injury ...my advice would be to have the unit checked by an authorized technician if you experience a rapid retraction of the pullcord....goodluck....brian d.

when mower is cranked, the enigine spits and sputters and balck smoke comes out from the side.

Did you hit something hard with your mower; like a stump or a rock? It sounds like your timing may be off. There is a key under the flywheel that is designed to break off if you hit something so that it doesn't bend the crank shaft on your mower. If that key breaks off, your mower will go out of timing and spit, sputter and backfire when you try to start it. Best of luck to you.
