Tip & How-To about Home
The decision to install new windows may be an easy one, such as in the case of new building construction for residential and commercial use. However, the decision to install replacement windows may be harder to evaluate. Knowing when to replace your windows may not be as obvious as you may think. Below are ten questions to ask yourself about your home's windows to help you determine if replacement windows are right for you.
1. Do your windows leak when it rains or do they allow drafts into the home?
If you have to clean up water during a rain storm or feel you need to put plastic over your windows in the winter, you may benefit significantly from having new windows installed. This will increase your comfort while reducing potential expenses.
2. Do your windows open, shut and lock with minimal issue?
If the answer is a resounding "no," then you may need to consider window replacement. Not only can those issues be a safety hazard in the case of emergency, they can also be a source of major frustration to a homeowner.
3. Are your windows comprised of single - pane glass?
If so, they are probably not energy efficient and are likely costing you money in regards to your heating and cooling bills.
4. Does your home feel particularly noisy, especially with noise from outside the home?
If you crave peace and quiet, yet never seem to get it, you may need to eliminate street or airline noise by replacing your current windows.
5. Do you still use storm windows?
Annual installation and removal of storm windows can be very time consuming and even difficult if you have a multi-level home. New window options will reduce your need for storm windows on your house.
6. Are your windows in regular need of painting?
Repeatedly painting your windows can be a hassle and ongoing expense. New windows - and all the things that go along with it - can eliminate the need to paint your windows in the future.
7. Are home decor items fading from sun damage?
If you notice your favorite rug or your comfortable sofa is looking discolored, it's probably a result of sun damage. Certain windows can help with the reduction of sun damage in your home, so keep those types of hidden costs in mind as you consider your window replacement options.
8. Are your windows aesthetically appealing?
Curb appeal goes a long way when selling a house. Windows can change the appearance of your home for better or worse, so lend a critical eye to how your home appears as you evaluate the need for new windows.
9. Do you find it difficult to keep your windows clean?
If you care about how clean your windows appear, you may want to consider replacing your windows. Some older window styles require more in-depth or more complicated window cleaning tactics to achieve the results you want.
10. Are your windows in poor repair from rot or old age?
If so, you don't want to delay replacing them, as further damage to your home could occur. This should be a high priority when considering replacing the windows in your home or business.
