Tip & How-To about Singer Sewing Machines

Garage Sale Sewing Machines

Before you get a sewing machine for $25 at a garage sale, make sure it truly sews.
You will need to bring thread, scrap material, and a pair of scissors. (I bring a couple types of pre-wound bobbins and a needle.) First, does it have all the parts? Bobbin case, bobbin, cord, foot pedal? Are the cords frayed, or the plugs broken? Will the owner let you plug it in? Are you able to thread it and wind the bobbin? Does it make a stitch in the straight stitch AND zig zag modes? If any of these are no, walk away. Use that $25 to save towards a quality new machine, or wait for another garage sale.

feeder not moving

knotted up thread under the material indicates that the needle thread tension is incorrect ( needs tightening)
once you have that correct the material, will feed normally
use scrap when adjusting and the correct tension is when the top and bottom threads meet at the join ( middle -center )of the materials being sewn

when i start sewing sometimes the material gets sucked down into the feeds dogs. this causes the thread and the material to make a mess i sometimes can not get the thread out i am making quilt pieces

Use a scrap of fabric under the pressure foot as a leader and feed the quilt square after it clears just like if you are chain sewing. After you have sewn the square clip the scrap off and use it again.

Bernina overlocker 203 locking thread is not sewing on fabric

You need to adjust the tension for your threads. Use scraps to test sew as you adjust the individual threads to bring them into proper balance. Your manual will tell you how to do this.

machine wont sew

You may need to get a scrap piece of material to lead off with or hold on to your thread and gently pull it to start your material.
