PCB DESIGNING - THE ULTIMATE REFERENCE GUIDE

The Old Days
Back in the pre-computer CAD days, PCBs were designed and laid out by hand using adhesive tapes and pads on clear drafting film. Many hours were spent slouched over a fluorescent light box, cutting, placing, ripping up, and routing tracks by hand. Bishop Graphics, Letraset, and even Dalo pens will be names that evoke fond, or not so fond memories. Those days are well and truly gone, with computer based PCB design having replaced this method completely in both hobbyist and professional electronics. Computer based CAD programs allow the utmost in flexibility in board design and editing over the traditional techniques. What used to take hours can now be done in seconds.
PCB Packages
There are many PCB design packages available on the market, a few of which are freeware, shareware, or limited component full versions. Protel is the defacto industry standard package in Australia. Professionals use the expensive high end Windows based packages such as 99SE and DXP. Hobbyists use the excellent freeware DOS based Protel AutoTrax program, which was, once upon a time, the high-end package of choice in Australia. Confusingly, there is now another Windows based package also called AutoTrax EDA. This is in no way related to the Protel software. This article does not focus on the use of any one package, so the information can be applied to almost any PCB package available. There is however, one distinct exception. Using a PCB only package, which does not have schematic capability, greatly limits what you can do with the package in the professional sense. Many of the more advanced techniques to be described later require access to a compatible schematic editor program. This will be explained when required.

my VHS player will occasionally accept the vhs tape but then it pulls out the film then turns off or ejects the tapes how can i fix it

Unfortunately there is some damage to the drive mechanism of the VCR. This will need to be fixed. I can't say what is causing it, but it is clearly not pulling the tape back inside the cassette before the eject action takes place.

I can't remember my Toshiba L300 setup password to enable me boot from CD.

There is usually a couple of pads underneath the laptop that will short out the BIOS battery which will reset the BIOS settings.

  • Disconnect the AC and remove the battery
  • Remove the memory
  • Peel back the black plastic film underneath but don't remove it entirely
  • Attach a piece of adhesive tape on the underside
  • Insert a memory stick
  • Stick the tape down on the case
  • You now have access to the two shorting pads named B500
  • Reconnect the AC and short out these pads.
  • Power on the laptop with these pads shorted out until the Toshiba logo disappears
  • Remove the AC and remove the memory stick
  • Remove the tape and replace the black plastic film
  • Reinstall all the memory
  • Replace the battery and the AC
This should have wiped out the BIOS passwords. Use enter to get into the password protected areas.

My waterrower has a leaking seam in the plastic tank. I know its not that expensive to get it fixed, but its a big hassle...80 mile round trip in heavy traffic. Is it ok to use plastic sealant like you use in bathrooms? And maybe cover with clear plastic tape? Will that work? What type of tape?

I sealed my tank seal permanently and also fixed cracks on the bottom with Loctite PL Marine Fast Cure Adhesive Sealant. On the inside when the tank was apart I glued a heavy plastic patch directly over the cracks in the bottom. I made the patch from a flat section of plastic cut from an old refrigerator crisper drawer. After installation with the tank laying flat and level glue the upper side of the tank to the adjacent wood for stability. Wait a few days before filling. Photos are attached. Our Polygun TC was left on for several days. It is difficult to thumb push in the 2" glue slug and is spewing a dark molasses color from the glue tip. How do we clean and clear this problem to easily exude a clear adhesive using 3M HM Glue #3764? Is this tool burnt out or? Thank you in advance. Terry Ettkins danielle@tekabrush.com

Hi,
The dark molasses is the old glue that is in the gun that was "cooked" I don't think the tool is burnt out. I would take a shot at pushing sticks into the gun while it is heated up until the glue that comes out of the tip turns clear. Then the gun should now be "cleaned"
Then unplug it, so that it cools down. After it is cooled , you will be able to remove the old dried up goo from around the tip so that it is completely clean.
WARNING: DO NOT IMMERSE THE GUN IN WATER
The gun is not really designed to be disassembled and cleaned.
The next time you use it, it should be fine.
Hope this helps,
Mark

For me, a bunch of the tape somehow got stuck in the roller... I had to use a tweezer to pull it all out.
