Tip & How-To about Bits Limited Smart Power Strip Scg5 W/ Coax, Fax/modem Surge Protection 7 Outlet
Surges give me more than half of my repair jobs,so it is best to simply unplug ALL of your best devices when you expect to be away for awhile, and your purchase of a surge limiter will cost you less than $30 on the net, or less than $40 at Walmart or Lowes, or Home Depot, and be sure to buy a 6' length of coaxial cable at the same time unless you have one hanging around. [They are right now probably in a closet among a whole bunch of stuff that's just barely too valuable to throw away -- stuff that your sweetie has threatened to chuck any minute now.]
Your surge limiter must be rated at 3000 joules or more, and must have at least two shiny threaded 3/8th inch projections on it to accommodate coaxial cables. The limiters are easy to hook up, but you can email to me for freebie coaching if you need to. I am at GrampsCanHelp@gmail.com
Lightning will jump limiters sometimes, and they get tired after 3 or 4 years so must be replaced, but thereafter they remain valuable as power strips. They are far far from being perfectly protective because fragments of lightning strikes jump them and damage them, but they are the best devices that low cost technology has been able to bring to us to date.
[A 'back-up' power supply containing a battery and isolation transformer will be more protective but costs 3 to 6 times as much. You may wish to get more details about them from me, but they should only be considered for VERY expensive or very precious devices.]
Hope this helps.
