Use relais to get 24V from two 12V batteries

2 relais of type SPDT (or SP CO) + 3 diodes + a simple ON/OFF switch is all you need to switch two separate 12V batteries to have an output of 24V without having to rearrange battery cables. I can send a PDF-drawing for details.

Wiring help


Could you strip back the the output cable about 3/4" and separate each conductor so that I can see them? Was there any indication of what the system voltage was? 12V? 24V? It should be fairly easy to fixya up. Tx, Petra

I have a 3010 John Deere +24 volt pos ground how do I change from 24 volt gererator to a 24 volt altenator


The 3010 24v JD system is not a true 24v system. It is a balanced split 12v system, with one positive ground battery and one negative ground battery. The only 24 volt accessory is the starter, where the batteries meet in a series to provide 24 volts for starting. All other accessories are 12v, half powered by the positive ground battery and half powered by the negative battery. The generator charges one battery in one direction and the other battery in the reverse direction. Therefore a 24v alternator is not easily adapted to this system.
The usual solution is to change to a 12v system with an alternator, changing the starter to 12v and changing the polarity of the positive ground battery to negative ground.
The cost of a 12v starter and alternator is far less than the cost of a 24v alternator, plus the added benefit of using 12v lights and other accessories.
JD switched to this 12v type of system with alternator during the 20 series production, but used two 6v batteries in a series due to the larger cranking amp rating of the 6v batteries occupying the same physical space.

Hi,

Based on your post/description, I would suggest that:
1. There is no need to install a diode from the boat motor alternator since most current design used electronic regulators with built-in diodes. The output of the alternator therefore could go straight to the battery or a switch (*selecting battery 1 or 2);
2. It would probably be safer that you would install a diode after a portable generator since some design do not need/use internal rectification but are connected straight to the windings/coil;
3. There is no need to install diode after each solar panel.

To my understanding the Plasmatronics have built-in in-line diodes to its inputs/outputs (unless otherwise required such as with the "Catch Diode protection" across the load). Additionally, unlike in some other system, a PL-20 would require that the negatives not be tied to a common ground. The PL-20 is relatively a straight forward connection (it's the programming that is a challenge).
