IPhone contacts can get lost due to various reasons, such as failed jail break, iOS update, mistaken deletion etc. Once your contacts or other types of data get lost you'd better not use your iPhone to avoid space overwritten. How to Recover Contacts on iPhone 6 (Plus) with iCloud
If you have backed up your iPhone to iCloud, you can recover the contacts by restoring your device but that will erase the existed data on your iPhone, or you can try merge the contacts with iCloud.
Firstly, make sure that you have enabled the iCloud on your iPhone: Go to Settings app > Tap on iCloud > Sign in with your iCloud account > Scroll down and tap on Storage & Backup > Tap on the On/Off toggle next to iCloud Backup to enable automatic backup. Now follow the steps to retrieve contacts from iCloud.
If you don't have backup, you may need to recover data from iPhone directly without any backup files. And an iPhone data recovery software can do this for you, PhoneRescue, is the most advisable way to go.
