Tip & How-To about HP 645A Magenta Toner Cartridge (C9733A) for Color LaserJet 5500 Printer

Toner Waste Collections

If you need to print and you don't have a spare Toner Waste Collector, take the old one out and find the small lever/door, place over a trash can, open the lever/door and shake it back and forth. Of course you will want to buy a new one at some point. This is another good printer/copier supply that is good to keep on hand at all times.

I keep getting an error message stating to install a waste toner box and close all doors.

Printers usually have a waste collector where excess toner is collected. Obviously, yours needs to be changed.

Epson C2600N waste toner collector full warning, after replacing the collector

Victor_Ott:

You have emptied the waste toner bottle, now you have to tell the printer that you have done so. The waste toner collection system has a "latch" (electrical signal) that is tripped when the bottle is full. it may be a pressure sensitive switch under the bottle or a photo-sensor that senses the toner level when full. I don't know the sequence of events to "switch" that latch. Usually on the larger machines it is a series of keystrokes on the printer's keypad, starting with turning the machine off and holding down a series of keys while turning the machine on (known as the "maintenance mode". Once you are in the maintenance mode, you can "trip" that "latch" to let the copier know that the toner collection bottle has been emptied.

changed toner---back side now prints dirty with band on the top. Did the cleaning procedure - no luck

If you changed toner because old was empty and now you have this defect with the new cartrige, it is most likley a defective cartridge. Try the old cartridge again, if it prints clean, then you know for sure it is the cartridge. If you purchased a new HP cartridge, get it replaced by HP, they warranty their toners against defects. If you bought a 3rd party toner, return it to where you bought it and get them to replace it. If you had your old toner refilled by someone, get your money back, they don't know what they are doing. This type of defect is often caused by a filled waste toner bin then then runs back out when you print. Some refillers just throw toner in and don't empty the waste toner bin.

While printing, it stopped and orange (error) light went on. Coolers work, it has toner and paper, no paper stuck, everything looks normal. I restart power , but it is the same. printer model Lexmark E120

You may still be able to do a printer selftest page.

Press the large button on the printer.

Look at the pages for

Toner
Imaging unit

The Imaging unit may be at end of life.

This is the drum unit and collects the waste toner.
Whilst you can just reset the drum counter (see user guide for this E120, it can lead to problems if you don;t replace the drum unit. I've seen E120 drum units packed full of waste toner, to the stage where they won't take any more, and it just spews all over the mechanism. It's a very small waste collector (but its also a very small printer, and relatively low capacity toner cartridges (1k, or 2k).

Remanufactured drum units for E120 can be found on the usual internet auction sites.
