IF that doesn't work, go to "msconfig" again and click the Startup tab. Disable all startup programs or, if you know which one is causing the problem, just a single program.

Hope this helps! Godspeed

there is a listing available somewhere in Windows wherein you can "quick launch" a program to have it mostly loaded when first turning on the computer ( or have the program deleted from such listing). I can't find the program which gives this listing. I'm using Windows XP

A program can not be 'mostly [or partly] loaded' actually. You can go into the program's settings though and see if there's a way for it to 'Run on Startup', which would load the program when your computer boots up. The only problem with this is that it can slow your computer down and make it take longer to boot up.

my HP laptop (Pavilion) is running very slow. I'm afraid to download the ''TV Specials'' we see advertised. Thx, Ray

download 'ccleaner' from filehippo.com & run it & remember when u run it, only check the temporary files, recycle bin, recent documents....
this might speed up ur notebook...
If you are using XP or Vista, you have this. You can access the boot menu by loading your MSCONFIG. During the boot up your computer issues a time out to find new hardware and software. You can short this time to boost your startup speed.
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type msconfig
4. In the system configuration utility, click either BOOT tab.
5. In the boot menu, change the default setting for Time Out from 30 to 5 seconds.

hp doesn't start. Always open xp window saying gathering info Please wait while windows configures scan. Installed cd with no problem.

As soon as you start rebooting your computer, hit F8 over and over again until you get into a boot menu. Pick "Safe Mode."

It should boot. This is a temporary fix.

When you're in, click Start, then Run. Type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Hit Enter.

A new window pops up. Click on the Startup tab. Find a file called hpqtra08.exe and undo the checkbox. Hit Apply and OK. msconfig will ask you if you want to restart with the changes; you do.

Your computer should boot normally. When it does, msconfig will ask you if you want that menu to appear next time you boot; you do not.
