Taking Care of your Kid's Ears

Ears aren't very high maintenence but there some things you should know about ear care that will help ensure healthy, happy ears.

What's the story with earwax?
Do you need to clean it out or should you leave it alone? Alot of kids don't realize that earwax is really helpful as it is there to protect the ear.
In general ear wax doesn't need removing as it makes it's own way to the entrance of the ear and comes out by itself.
although ear buds are really popular, they are actually damaging to the ear as it pushes the wax deeper in and can damdage the ear drum.
So don't stick anything small in your kids' ears to clean out the wax. Let it just do it's own thing and come out when it's ready.
Is swimming a problem for ears?
Water and ears are generally ok but there is a condition called swimmer's ear. It's basically an infection in the outer ear that is caused by swimming water getting stuck in the ear canal.
Usually ear drops will help sort it out quickly. If you have a problem with persistant ear infections you can buy special ear plugs that help keep the water out while you're swimming.
Pierced Ears - Is there anything special that I need to do for them?
When you get your ears pierced you need to follow the instructions from the salon and not remove the earings for up to 6 weeks, otherwise the hole might close up.
Pierced ears can easily get infected, so use an alchohol rub if you start to see any redness or sores.
If it gets very badly infected you may need an anti biotic cream but don't panic, it's very common and should clear up quickly.
Be Well.

im swimming every day ,what can I put into my ears to stop wax build up

!st of all if you are swimming everyday then you shouldn't have wax buildup. That's one of the problems with swimming a lot, the water and chlorine get into your ears and remove all the oils, that's why swimmers get (swimmers Ears). Now if you've just started swimming and water is getting trapped in your ears then you can go to the store and buy some Debrox ear wax remover ora lot of people just take regular old peroxide and put 2 or 3 drops in their ears and let it go to work. 2 or 3 drops every day and in a week or so your ears should be cleared out. The just a drop every couple of days to maintain it.

What is the problem with loud noise when it comes to ears? Can it really do damage or is that just a story made up by people who hate loud music?

It’s actually been medically proven that prolonged
exposure to loud music and loud sounds can damage hearing in the long run.
Obviously trauma to the ear from something like an explosion can cause
immediate hearing loss, but music etc is more likely to cause a slow
deterioration.

It’s highly recommended to use ear protection when
engaging in very loud level activities such as mowing the lawn.
A study has also shown that listening to music while
exercising can cause further damage to hearing as the blood flow during
exercise is diverted from our ears to our arms, legs and heart – making the
ears more vulnerable to noise.

What can I do to help prevent my dog from getting an ear infection? I clean his ears regularly; however he still seems to be getting infections.

I found a great natural remedy that works in preventing ear infections in dogs. I use it for my dogs and they have been ok for almost a year now.

THE FOLLOWING ALL NATURAL REMEDY
PREVENTS EAR INFECTIONS! This recipe is not meant to be used with Zymox. This should only be used once the ears are completely healed.

Keep in mind that it "will not" cure an existing ear infection.

Once you get your dog's ears to a healthy state either by using Zymox like we recommended or with the help of an antibiotic from your veterinarian, start using the following remedy weekly to prevent future infections. This works by raising the Ph level in the dogs ears.

Purchase an eye dropper bottle and the following ingredients
from your local pharmacy.

2 Tablespoons of Boric Acid
4 ounces of Rubbing Alcohol
1 Tablespoon of Glycerine

Shake the bottle before each use to thoroughly mix. Place a small eyedropper full into each ear. Cup the dog's ear and massage gently. Allow the dog to shake his head and gently blot dry any excess on the outside of the ear.
Do this weekly.

If ANY IRRITATION occurs - STOP using the recipe immediately!

Are pig ears a healthy treat?

Although they are quite delicious for dogs, pig ears contain a lot of fat. So if your dog suffers from obesity, do not give it pig ears.

is there a doctor to a person who can't hear

Hi there,

Have a blessed day.

When it comes to diagnosing and treating ear problems, doctors basically have three levels of "ear expertise." They are from least to most-primary care physicians (PCP), ear, nose & throat doctors (ENTs) and otologists/neurotologists. Each has their own niche.
1. Medical Doctors/Primary Care Physicians (MD/PCP) Often your first contact with the medical community is with a standard Medical Doctor (MD), often called a Primary Care Physician (PCP), General Practitioner (GP) or Family Doctor. These doctors have no specialized training in treating ear problems. However, you often need to go to one of these doctors in order to get a referral to an ear specialist such as an ENT or otologist.
Family doctors normally treat ear conditions of the outer ear and ear canal such as removing ear wax or treating infections in the ear canal. For problems in the middle and inner ear, they should immediately refer you to the appropriate ear specialist.
2. Ears, Nose & Throat Doctors (ENT) The middle level of "ear expertise" is the Ear, Nose & Throat doctor, commonly referred to as an ENT. The fancy term for these doctors is otolaryngologist (OH-toe-lar-ing-JOL-uh-jist) or sometimes by the ******-twisting name of otorhinolaryngologist (OH-toe-RYE-noe-lar-ing-JOL-uh-jist). (When you break this name down, it is easier to understand and pronounce. Oto-ear, rhino-nose and larynx-throat). Sometimes these doctors are called EENTs (eyes, ears, nose and throat doctors).
ENTs are medical doctors that have taken further training and specialized in problems of the ears, nose and throat.
Despite the name, ENTs do not spend a lot of their time working with ears. One otologist told me that he estimated the average ENT only spent about 5% of his time with ears. Thus you cannot expect them to be experts on many kinds of ear problems.
ENTs generally specialize in problems of the middle ear-typically middle ear infections and medical problems of the middle ear. This may include surgical procedures for things like otosclerosis, or removing middle ear tumors such as cholesteatomas. They may also perform CI surgery.
3. Otologists (Neurotologists) At the top of the pile is the otologist (oh-TOL-uh-jist) and neurotologist (NEU-roe-oh-TOL-uh-jist). Otologists and neurotologists are medical doctors who have trained as ENTs and then completed additional studies is the sub-specialty of otology (or neurotology). These are the real ear experts and are the doctors that know the most about inner ear problems.
If you experience sudden hearing loss and there is no obvious reason, these are the doctors that most likely will be able to help you. In fact, otologists/neurotologists are the only doctors (as a whole) that seem to recognize the true emergency nature of sudden hearing loss. Unfortunately, there are not very many otologists/neurotologists in the country.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using fixya.
