Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies
Many times when students make a presentation they have trouble keeping all the information in some sort of order. Following a few rules will give you the ability to give over your ideas and information in the most effective way while using a display board.
Using a headings and subheadings to draw attention to your points and emphasize your points. Try to avoid using long paragraphs and descriptions because you want to be concise giving over you point. You might want to make a summary of your presentation board because if you are in a convention or science fair like setting people will not spend a ton of time at your board.
Keep it clean and professional. When you put together your display board keep in mind what you are making the board for and who your audience will be. If you are going to a trade show or science fair you want to use the jargon or the language of the trade. If you are going to be using lots of images and graphs, number them and add captions. This will help to give structure to your display and make you look much more organized and professional.
If you are using the jargon of the trade you still might want to help out the layman. Having a summary of the terms for those who are not in the trade will be very helpful to get more people to understand your display. The summary can either be on the board itself or be an accompanying display that will stand next to your main display.
A few things that you should avoid when making your display board, some may seem very self explanatory and obvious but you would surprised how many people don't follow these simple rules. Try to avoid casting shadows on your board, if you make shadows it will make your board very hard to read. Don't build your display too deep, you want to put as much information on your board as you can, but try to fit too much will end up being a bad thing.
Keep it as close to eye level as you can. Occasionally you will see displays that are one of two extremes either they are too tall or too low. If you make your display board too tall people will have to crane their necks and you will have to make the text bigger so that it will be readable which might end up not really adding too much to your display. Try to keep it short and simple to get your point across. Don't stand your display on the floor because the text and images that you will put on the board will be too low for anyone to read. If you can't read the text standing up normally and easily don't do it.
Following these rules will help you to make a killer display board for your next science fair or trade show.
