Tip & How-To about Camping, Backpacking & Hiking

Proper cleaning and caring for your hydration packs

Properly caring for your hydration packs will help to prevent and clean up mold should it build up in your pack. To prevent mold from building up to begin with after every use you should be emptying the pack and letting it hang upside down to air dry.

Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda or bleach with hot water, pour the solution into the hydration pack and mix it up well. After mixing hold the pack or hang it upside down, and pinch the bite valve to let the solution fill the tube. This will clean out the tube that the water comes out of. Allow this solution to sit in the pack for 30 minutes.

After letting the cleaning solution out, fill the pack with hot water and a mild soap. Make sure that you get all the bleach and soap out of the pack before you use it again.

When you get all the soap and bleach mixtures out of the pack hang it upside down to air dry. If you are going to pack it up and put it away make sure that there is no mosture in it otherwise you will start to grow mold.

If you care for your hydration pack on a regular basis then you shouldn't need to follow these instructions all the time. Just emptying and hanging upside down to air dry is usually all you need, but its safe to every once in a while to do a thorogh cleaning.

can i cool pack in frig

Hello, yes, you can chill the bag in the refrigerator portion only. Since this type doesn't have a replaceable hose or bite valve you will have to but the whole thing again. Check the setting on the fridge first, anything over 32 degrees should be fine, mine has gotten a small inner layer of ice if it bumps up against a wall or the back, but don't seem o do any harm to the pack. I had the backpack for only a year and it fell apart, but Iv'e had the hydration portion for two years now, I love that little water back as much as I liked my military camelbak, Have fun with it, be careful not to overfill, DO NOT freeze the bag with water in the reservoir or the tube, if you pop[ the bag, you have to buy all the parts since the bite valve and the hose do not release from the main reservoir, and keep it clean and away from sharp objects when in the filed and htis hydration sac will last you years.

Extra mouthpieces

most (but not all) hoses on the hydration systems are similar. you should be able to buy a replacement mouth piece from any retailer that would be a likely fit for any other size hydration hose. alternatively take in the pack and ask to check if it will fit before buying

Is hydration packs convenient for athletes?

Hydration packs are much more comfortable than bottles of water. You don't have to slow down or stop to reach a bottle. Hydration is speedy, almost effortless tasks; just grab the mouthpiece, take a sip and go.

after washing my machine smells like stagnant water

First check to make sure that the machine is draining properly and that the pump filter is clear of any debris.

If the machine is a frontloader a common place for mold to build up is the rubber seal around the door. Clean this out as well as you can with ordinary kitchen cleaner then place a heaped cup of baking soda directly into the drum and run an empty hot/boil wash on a full cycle.

Baking soda has a cleaning and neutralising effect and will help remove any build up of mold or gunge within the machine. You may need to run two of these washes before you see a solid result.

Thereafter I recommend you run a monthly 'maintenance wash' with the baking soda to prevent the problem arising again.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa.
