Tip & How-To about Kitchen Appliances - Others

What is a Food Dehydrator Used For?

Not a lot of people have heard of food
dehydrators before – but there is a growing trend amongst health fans to use
food dehydrators as a major tool in their goal in pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

What is a food dehydrator?
It’s basically a machine that can
dehydrate fresh food using a fan and low temperatures. It removes the water
from food but manages to maintain the enzyme levels, so for it’s a good tool
for those wanting to follow a raw food diet.

Is it only good for raw food diets?
Whilst a food hydrator is good for raw food diet buffs, it can also be used by
anyone wanting to make healthy snacks at home without having to pay the high
prices charges in health shops.

What kind of snacks can you make in a
food dehydrator?

You can make fruit rolls, or your own
trail mix. You can dehydrate fruit and vegetables when you have an excess and
they would otherwise get ruined and even make your own beef jerky!

In my opinion, food dehydrators are not just a gimmick, but for those who take
their healthy diets seriously, it’s a great tool.

I have an American Harvest dehydrator. It's called a Pressaireizer, model FD1008P. The fan works but it doesn't get hot?

They aren't supposed to get hot. A dehydrator blows ambient cool air across the food to dry it. Heat would cause food borne pathogens to grow causing food poisoning. Wow, this one does. As a Food Safety Trainer, I find this very worrying!

This one will be close enough. you need to test the heating element, thermostat and wiring on it.

Has anybody heard of Nutriflow dehydrator? i dont think it is made any longer and I am wondering if Excalibur has bought them out?

I would suggest that most dehydrators operate at much the same temperatures for dehydrating various foods. This link could be of some use.

Hi I purchased a Nesco food dehydrator at a yard sale and need a manual for it . Model fd60, can I print one off the internet for this model?

I would think that any dehydrator information would work for you.
You just have to be sure the components are working (ie. fan and heating coil.) A dehydrator is pretty basic.
http://www.food-dehydrator.com/food-dehydrator/books.aspx here is a link for books on a site that sells the product.
You can find a lot of books at the library too.
This might also help, dont let the name fool you: http://www.astray.com/recipes/?show=Dehydrator%20general%20instructions
With some searching on line you will be able to find a lot of instructions and probably even ones for your specific dehydrator.
Look on forms about drying foods and ask for the basic instructions if you find you really need them after looking at the links above.
There might be someone willing to scan them and email them to you.
