How to clean and care for you wheelchair

Sometimes it feels like caring for wheelchairs and other medical equipment seems to fall to wayside. It is important that you clean your wheelchair on a regular basis. At first it may seem like a huge task, but once you get into the habit of doing it very often will make it easier.

Starting with the farme you want to use a non-abrasive waxed based cleaner because harder cleaners like furniture polish will scratch and damage the wheelchair. You want to make sure that all the moving parts are clean because if they're not over time they will start to make using the chair less efficient and maybe even break. Additionally using a wax based cleaner will help to keep the frame clean because it will be resistant to scratches.

To clean the cushion you have to make sure that it will have enough time to dry, it is recommended that you wash it so that it can dry over night. You don't need any fancy cleaning detergents to clean the cushions on a wheelchair, all you need is baking soda and water or vinegar. For small cleaning you can just wipe down the cushion. Some cushions covers are able to be removed and washed in the washing machine on a gentile cycle. Any time that something is spilled or a medical emergency happens the cushion should be cleaned immediatly.

The wheels shouldn't be over looked. You can use the same cleaners that you would use to clean biek tires to clean the wheels on your wheel chair, but if they're not getting cleaned to your liking you can wash them with a power washer. Over time you will find that your chair might accumulate some string and hair around the axle of the wheels, to clean this you will need a small sharp tool to clear them away.

I have recently purchased, used, a Everest and Jennings Metro Power power wheelchair. In searching the Internet, for any manuals or information, I have determined this is NOT a model three. I do not believe it to be a model two either. The controller is approximately 7" x 12" x 2" in size, lead me to believe this is an model one. I would like to find a user / owner / repair / maintenance manual. So far however I have not even been able to find a picture. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Have you contacted the Everest and Jennings Power Wheelchair company? Surely they would have something. I checked on eBay and found nothing in the way of owners manuals, but there are some medical supply companies who sell on eBay that I have purchased several items for my special needs daughter. They seem to have extensive equipment and supplies of all sorts.

Or, here is contact info for Doane's Medical Equipment who appear to have Everest and Jennings power wheelchairs. Perhaps they could point you in the right direction.

My mother has a 1818R Probasics full reclining wheelchair. The front caster fork assembly bent, probably due to the fact that we take the chair out on walks in forest preserves. Where can I get a replacement front caster fork assembly--preferably a heavy-duty piece? Thanks! Tom Bowman

Look in your Yellow Pages or online for a local Durable Medical Equipment Provider. They may have a part in stock if you are not able to get one from the manufacturer, or they can refer you to a local dealer. Probasics aka Professional Medical Imports: 800-438-0503

Any Durable Medical Equipment supplier can usually repair the chair if they carry mobility equipment. Look in the yellow pages for DME or Home Medical Equipment.
