Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1: Windows

How to disable and re-enable hibernation on a computer that is running Windows

The Hiberfil.sys hidden system file is located in the root folder of the drive where the operating system is installed. The Windows Kernel Power Manager reserves this file when you install Microsoft Windows. The size of this file is approximately equal to the amount of random access memory (RAM) that is installed on the computer.
The computer uses the Hiberfil.sys file to store a copy of the system memory on the hard disk when the hybrid sleep setting is turned on. If this file is not present, the computer cannot hibernate.
Hibernation is made unavailable when you set the value of the Hibernate after setting to Never by using the Power Options item in Control Panel. To make hibernation unavailable, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press ENTER.
Type exit, and then press ENTER.

what would make an hp laptop w/windows vista not turn on ,even tho its fully charged

So many things. Does it turn on at all or it just won't boot into Windows? If it doesn't turn on at all, remove the battery and run straight from the power cord. Make sure you are getting power to the computer.If you are getting power and the system turns on, but won't boot into Windows, trying booting into safe mode or using a recovery disk to start at a command shell. Remove the hiberfil.sys file and try to restart. The hiberfil.sys is a hidden system file so you'll need to use the following commands;
attrib -r -s -a -h hiberfil.sys
del hiberfil.sys

Try that. I just fixed a laptop last week and I had to delete the hibernation file in order to get the laptop to boot.

my pc is locked in hibernation mode, I think. Powers up, but mouse and keyboard won't respond. What should I be doind? Frustrated.

The best solution I have found for this problem is to remove the hard drive and attach it as either an external drive or internal secondary drive on another PC.
Once your PC has booted up click on the drive in my computer, making sure that it is the secondary drive and not the primary which is usually called drive C.
Make sure your files and folders setting is unchecked in the area called hide extensions for known file types, and hide protected operating system files. This is found by clicking the tools tab on my computer, then folders, then view.
Now find the file called hiberfil.sys in the root directory of the hard drive from your malfunctioning computer and delete it. Turn off the PC, remove the drive and reinstall it in the original PC. You should now be able to start windows properly.
If this method is too difficult or impossible for you to do you can also obtain a copy of Ubuntu and run your PC from the Live CD version. Then you can simply find the drive in the drives directory on Ubuntu and remove hiberfil.sys that way. Restart the PC, after removing the CD and all should be fine.

can I increase disk space for Presario F762NR notebook? And if so..how. Thank-you

You can compress the disk and gain a little room which might meet your needs, otherwise you can buy a new disk and install it. I have cloned many laptop disk drives onto new ones. It does take some special cables and and a desktop computer to do however.

Before I do either, I'd try a disk clean up. Turn system restore off then back on to delete all the SR files. Down load CCleaner and run it against the disk and run the registry cleaner.

Disable Hibernation and delete Hiberfil.sys, if the space problem is critical on your System Drive. Its a hidden file on the root directory of your system drive. Open Control Panel. Type Hibernate in the search bar. Select turn Hibernate On / Off.

If you want to try the compress, double click My Computer, right click on the C:\drive, PROPERTIES, check Compress this drive.. This will take awhile so don't turn off the computer or let it shut down. Some say you should not compress the windows folder but I've never had a problem and they slow down is almost not noticable.

my laptop was on hibernation. now it is not booting. please help

Hibernation is enabled by default in Windows Vista, and is one of the seven options (i.e. Hibernate) that appears on the Vista shutdown menu. Hibernate your Vista system will enable you to quickly restore to existing system state and intact workspace instead of start afresh, run programs and open your documents one by one again. If you do not use the hibernate feature in Vista, and want to delete hiberfil.sys and then recover the space occupied by the big hibernation storage file, the hibernation function can be turned off and disabled.
Unlike Windows XP, users cannot turn the hibernation on or off via Vista GUI interface anymore. Previously users can enable or disable hibernation via Power Options applet in Control Panel. This option no longer available in Windows Vista, which also enables Hibernate ability and creates hiberfil.sys by default. Instead, users have to rely on command line utility Powercf and Disk Cleanup Wizard to disable hibernation in Vista. Microsoft KB920730 provides details on how to disable and turn off hibernation on computer running Vista system. You must log on to Vista with user account in Administrators group to perform these action.

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt or Cmd, and then click Run as Administrator on the pop up contextual menu.
If you are prompted by User Account Control for permission, click Continue.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

powercfg.exe -h off
Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Another easier workaround for those who’re not comfortable to work with command line is to disable hibernation and hybrid sleep feature in Windows Vista is by using Disk Cleanup wizard tool, the built-in Windows disk cleaner to delete hiberfil.sys file. The hibernation file must be enabled to access the hybrid sleep feature and the hibernation feature in Windows Vista.
Click Start button, then go to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and run Disk Cleanup.
Choose which files to clean up, either My files only or Files from all users on this computer is fine.

On “Drive Selection”, select the Windows Vista boot drive to clean up. Note that you must select the drive where Vista is installed, which normally is also the boot drive (C:) as hiberfil.sys file will be located on the root folder of it.

Once Disk Cleanup finishes scanning the system, Disk Cleanup for Vista window will open.
Select and tick the check box next to the Hibernation File Cleaner.

You can select or deselect other type files to clean or preserve from the available items or options in the list provided.
Click OK button when done.
Hibernation will now be removed and disabled.

It will solve your problem.
