That would be normal, as the variable speed fan comes on only when the computer is under load.

What is not normal is that the fan is not coming on when the computer overheats.Or that the fan is not cooling enough when computer is overheating.

Monitor computer temperature using a software, check if Fan is coming up when temperature gets critical.

If fan comes up but does not cool enough, then replace the fan, it is not efficient anymore because of a bad bearing or dust. ~Also ensure that fan is well mounted, if fan has poor contact with CPU surface , cooling will be poor.

If fan does not come up, and critical temp is not detected, then the sensor on motherboard is bad, this is very uncommon. When this happens the problem is usually related to system or power settiings , rather than overheating.

If fan does not come up and temp is critical, then fan is faulty, replace it.

There are also more than one fan on many laptops, check that one of the fans (CPU fan, video fan) is not completely ded, and therefore cause for the problem.

By using the software below you can also find out if the problem is really overheating. If temperature results within normal range, then usually it is not overheating. In that case test systtem and check power saving settings.

Here is the software to control your fan and temp. sensor state:

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Download SpeedFan 4.38

I am having this problem with my MT314 as well. I downloaded the speedfan software but it does not appear to detect any fans on my system. Did it not install properly or is something wrong with my computer... please help. I'm buying external fans but sometimes they still don't fulling solve the overheating/crashing issue.

The MOST common problem with laptop (CPU) over-heating is caused by DUST/LINT blocking the "radiator" in the fan's (air) cooling path. The dust is sucked in from the bottom of the laptop, is blown through the fan blades and eventually accumulates in front of the radiator fins. When the air path through the radiator is blocked by dust, the fan spins faster and faster, trying to cool the radiator. It may reach a point where there is no air path and the CPU will over-heat and trigger an automatic over-temp shutdown. In my shop, we clean EVERY laptop (radiator) more than a year or so old. Usually all you have to do is remove a panel from the bottom of the laptop to access the fan, radiator, and CPU heatsink. Alternately, you might be required to remove the keyboard to access the fan/radiator. In all cases, you will have to loosen the (usually) 4 screws which attach the cooling/heat-sink assembly to the CPU, and remove this assembly to get at the radiator. After dust removal, you will have to clean off the top of the CPU, then heat-sink, and apply new thermal grease to the top of the CPU. Follow manufacturer's recommendations, if available.
