How to replace a run capacitor

A Run capacitor has 2 terminals, they go to the Run and Start winding terminals, in this case the Line 2 leg of power is wired to the Run terminal on the run capacitor, that is due to the fact this is a single speed motor and speeds are on the Run winding, had there been 2 speeds, the Line 2 leg of power could not be wired to the Run capacitor but would be going to the High or Low speed terminals, conversely the Run terminal on the compressor can accept only 1 lead.
All electric motors get 1 leg of power directly to the Common lead, the remaining leg of power Always goes to the Run winding or speeds on the run winding if a multispeed motor.
Some compressors have a shared capacitor with 3 terminals, they share the leg of power to their Run windings however to Hermetic it will be say 30 MFD and to Fan it will be say 5 MFD, but as to capacitor theory they get Run and Start Always
Power can be wired to Run on the capacitor as long as the motor is a single speed.
But power ALWAYS goes to Common directly while the remaining leg of power goes to the Run winding or Speeds on the Run winding as in High and Low speeds.

Do manufacturers of electric, cap-start/cap-run, 1ph motors use a standard wiring code for the capacitor wiring?

probably not as different manufacturers use what ever wire is available at the time of manufacture
however there is a standard attachment method for the capacitors and that is the diagram that you should be seeking
for example-- many capacitors have two lots of connected terminals and the motor will have only 2 wire ,so connection is to one each of the terminals that is not connected
others have 3 wires so one wire on one terminal and two wires on the connected terminals
This is knowledge that motor repairs will have learnt in their trade so it may be advantageous for you do do a lot of home work on power

Sorry it took a while to get back to you; I had to leave for work. Sounds like you have a capacitor with 3 connections on it. Common, Herm, and Fan. It should be connected as follows. One line from the contactor should connect to the common terminal on the capacitor. From the fan, the brown or start wire should go to the fan terminal and the orange or start wire should go the common terminal on the capacitor. The black or common wire should go to the other leg of the contactor(not the one connected to the capacitor.) For the compressor, the purple or start wire should go to the Herm terminal and the red or run wire should go to common on the capacitor. The black or common wire should go to the same side of the contactor as the black wire from the fan. Let me know if this is too confusing.

Does the motor data plate say anything about the motor. You can hook up a motor like yours with 3 wires. First use an ohmmeter and check the resistance between the brown/white wire to the black then the yellow wire. The resistance between brown/white and one of the others should be pretty much 0 ohms. If not check between the brown wire and the black and the yellow. Which ever wire has 0 ohms with the brown/white wire is the common leg. You can put a wire nut on the brown/white, it will not be used. Next the brown should be for the start winding and the other wire left over will be the run winding. Then connect the common to L2. L1 will go to the run winding and one side of the capacitor and brown will go to the other side of the capacitor. I hope this isn't too confusing. Let me know if I need to explain it better.

The 2 brown wires to the cap in first legend is how they are wired electrically,inside that motor the run winding is common to that brown one they cappped off in the 2nd option, but the powers still going to Run.ommon and run get the juice either way, its just another way to do it, but electrically as to sides of power and where they go is no different, just different way to do it.you can run power in on the Run terminal on the run cap, the run winding and run cap and start cap if equipped are Run to Run to Run.So the hot leg for the run winding also goes to run on the caps, run to run to run.,run winding to run cap to run on start cap.
