Tip & How-To about Finance

Know Your CD Grace Period!

When investing money in a CD, make sure you know your grace period and mark it on your calendar. Your grace period is when you can withdraw money from the CD account, and it usually lasts anywhere from 7-10 days. Because banks tend to automatically renew at the current rate, you may be stuck with lower interest rates when your CD matures if you do miss it.
If you do choose to withdraw money outside of your grace period, some banks may charge up to a $25 fee. And no matter what the original fee was, the longer term the CD, the higher the penalty.

How can i withdraw IRA funds without paying the penalty?

If you are over 59and a half years old you do not pay the 10% penalty to begin with. If you are younger though, there is a method called SEPP (Substantially Equal Periodic Payments). IT consists of a withdraw of a portion of your IRA money in a series of carefully calculated annual payments.
The downside with this method is that each time you must withdraw exactly the predetermined amount and keep withdrawing each year for at least five years, or until you turn 59 and a half, whichever comes last.

Are there risks to investing in annuities?

There many risks in any sort of investment. Annuities are not immune to these risks, like say the bank you have you annuity with goes bankrupt the investment is not FDIC insured therefore it is very important that you make sure that the bank you're investing with is refutable. Check the fine print! Look out for a surrender charge some fixed annuities can charge you should you withdraw money before it matures and can be high charges reducing the amount that you will receive after retirement. There can also be age restrictions like giving you a tax penalty should you withdraw the money before the age of 59. Keep in mind that immediate annuities don't change their interest rates with the economy so you can't guarantee to always have a great interest rate.
