My Bar B Chef grill grates are totally rusted. Are stainless steel grates better or should I stick with cast iron?

I prefer cast iron. Cast iron heats more evenly and retains temperature better. If they are falling apart from rust, junk them. If they just have surface rust and no holes, all you have to do is brush them with a steel brush at high heat. Wipe them off with a wet rag and then rub it with an onion to provide a teflon layer. if it is really heavy rust, spray oven cleaner on them and hose off. After use or for storage, clean them and then wipe them down with a cooking oil soaked rag. The oil will reduce rust build up.

i lost the grill grate for my lil barbeque bucket. do you know where i can get a replacement grate? it's 13" across. thanks!

Most home centers (Lowe's & Home Depot) and other big bx stores, that sell grills and accessories, carry universal replacement grates in different shapes and sizes. Since you know the diameter, you're half way there.

Hope this helped you and Happy Grilling!!

My food is covered in black smoke. The whole inside of the grill is also covered. I just cleaned gril with warm water and a brilo pad. (no soap) Could it be bad propane

You described exactly what never should be done... never use water to clean your grill.

Described symptoms indicate insufficient air supply to the burners, please remove burners and dry clean them with wirebrush and blow them with pressurised air if available to remove dust and rust particles, check if all holes are free of debris, water caused bit of rust to clog these holes. This cause insufficient air supply and in return, unburnt fuel cause sooth to appear on all surfaces, including food.

Grill after use should be just wipped off with old newspapers, fat prevent grill from rusting, when you start grill next time, you just splasch it with beer (no joke!) and whipe off excess. Acids and alcohols in beer will dissolve stale fat and clean whole grill area, beer as well will enhance flavour of barbecued food as well.

This advice is true not only for your particular grill model but for any grill or barbecue, regardless of mode of operation, be it propane, gas, electric, wood or whatever heat source you use.

Hope your next food will be delicious, that is recipy for my best teriyaki (marinade) for your meat:

Produce:
1 tablespoon freshly chopped ginger
1 freshly chopped medium size onion
2 cloves freshly crushed and chopped garlic
2 tablespoon honey
1/2 cup soy sauce (japanese or chinese!)
1/4 cup of water

Method:
Mix all ingrediens well, slice your met and add to mix, leave in cold for at least half hour (I prefer for about 4hours), skew and use as a shashlik marinade, or just as marinade for your grill steak, delicious anyway :-)!

Hope recipy will brighten your day.

Rusted Grill Grate

and why do you want to replace it? just use bit of wirebrush, scarape off biggest bits, wipe rest with cooking oil and use as normal.

after cooking wipe clean (do not wash!!!) and use bit of cooking oil again to preserve it.
