Plumbing piping can actually be used outside of the walls. I've seen and done things myself using metal plumbing piping as decorative yet effective tools. I've seen them as curtain rods, lighting fixtures and legs for tables.
My favorite, though, is screwing them into walls and using them as shelves for books. You can make all kinds of crazy patterns and designs using extensions. Google plumbing and shelves. See what you find!
