Tip & How-To about GE Superadio III AM/FM

Solution for the stability problem

GE and RCA SR-3 production suffers from an ill-advised change in tuning potentiometer. It causes the tuning to be unstable - the radio is almost unusable due to difficulty in tuning to stations and the radio has difficulty staying on stations.

The value of the pot is a bit unusual - 300k. I have found that a 500k pot, with 470 fixed resistors across each leg (low to middle, middle to high) allows the radio to tune the entire AM and FM bands, although dial calibration is really bad. The tuning voltage high and low pots will need to be adjusted at the very least, and the whole front end will probably need re-alignment.

I have modified at least a half a dozen of these radios this way, Fry's has an appropriate pot but the shaft is aluminum and needs to be machined. The radios are as stable as early production SR-3's, and are fine DX units.

The FM section can also benefit greatly from the narrow ceramic filter modification. I can routinely use the radio for stations over 100 miles away after the modification.

Possibly a bad volume/on/off volume potentiometer. Try using canned air around the volume/on/off knob to remove any debris down along the shaft. If this does not help, your unit may need repair. Do not use any chemicals, cleaners or solvents on the shaft, only use air.

Clean your internal battery contacts on the batteries and the radio with a pencil eraser to assure good connection. If you are using rechargeable batteries, try charging the batteries again.

If this does not help, your unit may need repair.

Best regards.

This works for the Furuno 1501-Make sure your connections are the same:#1 provide 15V & gnd to tuner(12V works) #2 connect coax between tuner & Xmtr / antenna to tuner #3 set radio to transmit CW carrier @ no more than 10W #4 momentarily short tune to gnd, this will initiate tune process. Watch SWR meter/ listen for tuner to complete, stop 10W carrier & return radio to normal status. I use mine remotely mounted with a 3 wire control cord & a box with a push button momentary switch back at the radio. Connections are 12V & gnd from the power supply to tuner, tune back to control box where the button shorts it to ground to tune.

I have RCA Clock Radio #RP3710A, How do you set the time without unplugging the clock/radio?

Press "set" one time to set alarm one, two times to set alarm 2, and 3 times to set the time using the "tune/time" buttons for forward and backward. If you wait too long to push one of them or stop too long, it will time out and go back to the last setting.

what would cause the concrete weight on the tub to disintegrate (washer is 3 years old)?

Hi,

well it sounds like this washer has suffered from extreme vibration. that can be caused by several things. 1) non "HE" detergent being used. 2) shipping bolts not removed soon enough after unit was used. 3) continual and consistent overloading. 4) a very unstable floor, inefficient pedestal. 5) shock absorbers broke and gone unattended too long after separating from tube and or base/chassis.

bottom line is there are many possible causes of the counterweight breaking apart, (even loose counterweight hold down fasteners) these are just a few.

now the good news...

as long as no further damage has occurred, these units are a dime a dozen at used appliance depots and you should be able to locate a relatively inexpensive replacement part.

hope that helps, I know it sucks...no matter if it's 3yrs. or 13yrs old !

good luck

it powers up....no modulation ...output power..or receive....just static...galaxy dx 949...

Sounds like the PLL may be toast. Either that, or someone has **** with the wrong potentiometers or tuning slugs in the radio, causing to to no longer resonate on the correct freqs.
