Surprisingly enough, most freezing problems (and other problems, too) can be solved by gently hitting your camera. It works! Just remember to be gentle.

Fantastic...... I was about to put it in the rubbish. My Canon A520 froze with the lens out. I took it to repair shop and they quoted £60 to repair. Having read this I gave the camera a couple of bumps against my desk and heypresto it started to work. Thanks very much for great advice and I'm not normally lucky !

ENTIRE camera not working, and you might think it is broken or the batteries are not working -- most likely you will change to new batteries, but nothing works.
"jackboy", who is a person on this site helped me; and I say thanks to him! The batteries were NOT making contact. I noticed the door has been a little uneven in one spot. After pressing the outside of that side to make the contacts on the door completely touch the batteries, IT WORKED!!! I just placed scotch tape around that one edge, and I'm taking pictures just fine!
This site is WONDERFUL!!!

Unbelievable
I have a QV-R61 that had frozen with the lense out and blank screen. I did as I was advised and gave it a few sharp taps and it worked, fantastic. The thing is I was ready to take it round the camera repairers tomorrow and pay up to £50 to get it fixed.

Oh bother! I have had this freezing problem with my brand new S860! What I kept doing was just opening up the battery compartment and closing it back up, and it seemed to help. I will just try the hitting or shaking but......GEEZ!
BUT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN. It makes me nutzzzzz.
You go to use the camera , it won't turn on. Or you go to shut off the camera, it won't shut off. There has to be a permanent fix for this stupid problem. :)

HAD PROBLEM WITH MY HP733 NOT COMING ON AT ALL. CHECKED THE LITHIUM BATTERIES WITH A METER , SAID OK,, IN THE GREEN,, BUT,, CAMERA WOULD NOT FIRE UP. TRIED THE SHAKING THE CAMERA TRICK, NO LUCK.
REPLACED WITH BRAND NEW BATTERIES,,, THAT WAS THE PROBLEM, SO DONT TAKE FOR GRANTED THE BATTERIES ARE OK EVEN IF THE METER SAYS THEY ARE. WORKS LIKE NEW AGAIN AND LITHIUM IS THE ONLY BATTERY FOR A DIGITAL CAMERA. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.

Holy! I can't believe it worked. I have looked everywhere, in my manual, online, and nothing! No help. This was the only thing I've found. I truly had my doubts, but it worked for me. Good luck.

Awesome. I was about to go buy a new Dimage z3 because it was zoomed all the way out and useless. Gave it a slightly rough tap, and viola the lens works again!
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this tip. It worked! After hours of searching the internet and waiting from a resonse from the HP support group I was about to give up when I decided to try one last time and ran into this Website. I just held the camera about an inch above my mouse pad and let it go. It really worked!!!

Worked like a champ! My PDR-3310 was locked up (open) and wouldn't respond to anything. I held it about 3/4 of an inch above a wooden table top and gave it a firm (but not too firm) rap. Cleared the problem!
THANKS!!!!
Nothing like the ole "Vertical Radical Impact Test" ...

This suggests a loose connector in this case, may not be so in others. An alternative is to gently squeeze the casing, here and there , particularly the battery compartment cover -a loose contact causing power loss.
