Tip & How-To about Dogs

How to train your dog to use their dog bed

Many people have told me that they find it difficult to train their dog to use the bed they bought for them rather than sleeping on their owners beds. I thought I would post a few tips here that you may find helpful.

The easiest way to train a dog to do this is to start when they are a puppy. Needless to say, older dogs can also be trained.

A large part of bed training, believe it or not, comes down to proper bed placement. It is crucial you find the right spot in your home for your dogs' bed. Try to find a place away from direct sunlight and free of drafts. Try to find a location away from too many loud noises and excessive interruptions, while still close enough to feel a part of the family interactions.

I recommend that you try to associate their bed with positive reinforcements such as playing and snacking. You should verbally reward your pet every time he/she approaches the bed on their own agenda. Try putting one of your dogs favorite toys in the bed. This will indicate to your dog that it is a safe place.

Be patient. With some dogs bed training could take several days; depending on the age of your dog, it could take up to 2 weeks. Stay diligent and don't give up. Your dog will come to love sleeping in their own bed and you will find that they will spend a lot of time there.

How can I get my dog to sleep in its bed?

First, location is extremely important. The bed should be in the living room. Dogs crave companionship. So, by putting the bed in the living room, where most family members take time to relax, your dog will also find its place in the family on their bed.

What are some benefits to getting a dog bed?

Ok, so there are several benefits to getting a dog bed for your pet. Firstly, like humans, it is important to have your own space. A dog bed will provide your dog with a sense of security. Most beds also protect your dogs' joints and bones with extra cushioning. With a bed of their own, dogs will be less likely to jump up and down from other furniture, in turn preventing possible injuries.
