Tip & How-To about Cats

Why arginine is important for cats

Arginine is a really important part of a cat's diet. Arginine is an amino acid that helps the body to get rid of ammonia and stimulates the release of insulin. Why is arginine so important for cats? Cats need to produce protein ornithine and the only way they can do it is by converting it from arginine. When a cat doesn't have enough arginine in it's' system (arginine deficiency), it cannot produce enough protein ornithine to get rid of ammonia, which leads to harsh symptoms such as drooling (first symptom), noisiness, formation of ataxia (in severe cases), and even death (rarely). Moreover, too much ammonia in the cat's blood can lead to different brain diseases. How can you make sure that your cat gets enough arginine? It's actually pretty simple. Cats can easily get all their arginine requirements from commercial food, dry or canned. If a cat is put on a raw diet, it can get arginine from raw foods such as chicken, beef, turkey, beans, and dairy products.

What vegetables are good for cats?

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their natural diet is strictly raw meat ONLY. Cats biologically need the complete amino acid chain that is supplied in animal protein. Vegetables have amino acids but are missing certain parts, dogs and humans have the biological ability to synthesize the missing amino acid in vivo but cats can not. So long story short, no vegetables are not good for cats, however my cat loves pumpkin and canned beetroot. It is very hard to find cat food that contains no vegetables, the only way to give your cat the correct diet nature intended is to make it yourself.
