Tip & How-To about Beyerdynamic TGX58 Professional Microphone

Broken Beyerdynamic tgx58

This is a basic vocal mic, SM58 copy with a switch. If your having loose connection problems, unscrew the Male XLR section, unscrew the grill & give the foam/rubber sections a gentle wiggle & tug, gets you to the diaphragm. But if the switch goes you've had it. I can't find any conceivable way to fix the damn thing.

eq for male vocal mic on mackie 1604 vlz3

There is no easy answer to this. It will depend on the mic, the speakers and the singer and genre amongst many other things. It will also probably be room dependent too although the overall eq should be able to take this out of the equation to a large extent.
Your best bet is to get someone to sweep the frequency on the mid range with a bit of positive and then a bit of negative eq to find where most affects your vocals then fine tune to your liking. Are you using a bit of reverb/chorus/echo as his can often, when used sparingly, enhance even a good singer. The biggest difference you'll probably find is from using different mics. The ubiquitous SM58 does not suit everyone but is robust, warm and forgiving but if you're after a more pure sound there are many more accurate mics you can try.

My sm58 has a low level buzz or hum. how should I proceed to diagnose and repair. I am assuming a loose wire or a frayed wire grounding out.

This could be any of several things. IF the audio output of the mic is at a normal level then the first thing to check is the mic cable. I have several things to discuss so read all of this and then test.

First, I found six BRAND NEW XLR cables were wired wrong... the vendor had 13000 of them in stock and was going to have to check them all. The cables appear to work, but had the shield and one signal wire in the wrong place so the line was NOT a twisted pair balanced as required, but instead a plain coax. I had to repair these at a venue when I discovered the problem. Please google the correct XLR configuration. The pin numbering is NOT what one would expect. You cables (open the ends and look) should have the shield tied to pin 1 which is one of the side pins. Mine they had the shield on the middle pin or apex of the triangle.

Second, there are COUNTERFEIT Shure SM58's being sold. Read about that at google... If you unscrew the screen and find a label on the side of the element, the mic is a fake... Now there are two qualities of fakes... some perform ABOUT as good as the genuine, and others don't even have the balancing transformer.

If the hum is only there while handling the mic, the ground to the shell is not connected... this is mainly a mechanical connection. You can extract the XLR male plug from the bottom of the mic by removing the side screw and gently pull out by grabbing one of the pins. Also you can verify the wire colors as the fakes use the wrong color wires.

Noise problems are my specialty so if you need further help send a comment to me.

I put it through my pa system for band practice and it just isnt loud enough. I have a 1000w Powered mixer so its not that. I tested other vocal mics and they get really loud. but I lvoe the Sm58 why doesnt it work?

Other than being dropped, or the xlr connection is faulty...a sm58 is pretty indestructible. Try a differnt cable, a different channel on the mixer. Mght be time to spend the 100.00 and get a new one. Be careful of fakes that are out there.

Shure SM58 Ticking Noise

Try turning off the phantom power required to use for the v67. Check connections on the 58 by removing the connector where the xlr connects, and making sure that's looks good. hope this helps.
