Tip & How-To about Heating & Cooling

Vent free heater tune up

An ODS space heater is a nice way to keep warm on the nastiest winter nights. It does not require power either so when the lights go out the ODS space heater keeps on truckin. This vent -free system is used on most fireplaces and space heaters today. A heater/fireplace using the vent-free system sits idle in summer months and dust gets a chance to accumulate in the pilot safety. After lighting the pilot and starting the heater all will be fine for a few minutes then the pilot goes out and heat fades away. The thermocouple for these is a superior grade one that is much costlier to buy than an ordinary t-couple. Lots of folks buy a new thermocouple only to realize that didn't fix the prob. Well I have the solution. I took some photos:

Each year just before the cold season you should at least vacuum the grates for flame unity and blow the cobwebs out the pilot to avoid having problems. Hope this helps someone.
A nice video from Micheal Holigan which explains how it works.

My glo-warm wall mount heater pilot light will not light. I tried the ignitor, saw blue spark , and nothing. I also tried using a lighter, I got it to light barely once and that was it. I can't smell any gas coming through the line either?

Without the model number of the heater it is hard to give an accurate answer but I will give you some suggestions.

I would start with cleaning the pilot ODS assembly.
http://www.msservice.net/ts/reseat_thermo-clean_pilot-ODS.htm

I would check the regulator on the heater...if it is propane these gas get raw gases in the regulator and cause the unit not to pressure up correctly.

Give these items a try first before replacing any parts.

Have a space heater in the living room and one in the kitchen. Seem to work fine during the day but go out at night. What could be causing that?

These unit have a Pilot/ODS system built into them.
The ODS (Oxygen Depletion System) will shut these units of if the oxygen get to low.
This will sometimes happen more at night that during the day...people moving around more during the day, opening a door let more oxygen in.

Try cracking a window and see if the units stay on all night as a test to see if this could be the problem.

i have a mod gwp10 glow warm heater and the pilot light will light but when i turn it to the high pos the pilot light goes out every time unless you blow on the thermocoupler. " at least thats what seems to work" and then it will go out after 10 min.

You have dust in the pilot safety. The system detects low oxygen in the area and weakens the flame on the pilot. Dust imitates the low oxygen. Blow out the ODS or flush it with a tiny drop of rustbuster.

what is the lowest temperature I can maintain with this heater ? That is, I plan to use it in crawl space where water pump and pressure tank and copper pipes and water heater are located and in winter just want to keep space heated to slightly above freezing. Will this heater work ? Thanks. ms

YOu are asking a question that cannot be properly answered without knowing more of the situation. If this crawl space is subject to large air drafts and there are air vents that allow openess to this area, then you cannot be sure of the results. Since it will be winter, the humidity build-up is not so much a factor and you should take steps to isolate this area from air movement. Then you can apply heat. You may want to make a temporary plywood barrier around this area so your heat stays confined, thereby using the minimal heat needed to keep the temp you want. The heater will most likely handle the job; you should get a thermometer and keep the space at 40 degrees farenheit or slightly higher. When the warm weather arrives, remember to open the air venting again.
