Tip & How-To about Cooling System for Toyota Camry V6

Split in radiator top tank

It is common for the plastic radiator top tank to develop a split, often small, and in a hard-to-see spot such as the joint with the radiator core.

If you have a coolant leak, look carefully for this too.

i have a 2000 nissan xtterra that is leaking anti freeze by the rad but i cant find any holes. what could it be

There is a small bypass hose that goes from the thermostat housing into the top of the water pump. You have to disassemble quite a few things to even get a look at it. It is a common problem and needs to be fixed as soon as possible. It is located directly above your timing belt and the antifreeze will cause your belt to degrade and fail, then you will be replacing bent valves.

It looks like the top of the radiator is leaking quite badly.

no--- this is the plastic tank cracking and will allow the engine to overheat because of the lack of pressure in the system
Best advice is a new radiator as the plastic cracks from age mostly and the radiator is unreliable

Camry GRACIA 2.2L developED a crack in the plastic radiator top tank AND engine heats up and pressurises the radiator. How do I overcome this?

I think it is not a cost effective thing to try plastic welding the top tank. Just buy another rad off eBay or similar and put it in. Not a hard job. Replace the hoses too, and the coolant unless it is dead new.

water leaking underneath the motor

A little leakage is normal. Also the A/C will drip water, but that comes down from the firewall area.

From the motor, it may indicate a leaky water pump. This will drip from the front of the engine which is the right side as the driver looks. The pump is located under the timing belt cover.

Also check all your large hoses to see if a leak has developed at any joint.

The V6 engine often develops a water leak under the intake manifold which is hard to see. The water appears on top of the transmission. Camrys will often also get a split in the plastic radiator top tank, so look there.

If you are not losing large amounts of water, you have a while to track it down at leisure !

radiator has busted twice in one month

ccarver96: 1st the radiator, unless it has been replaced with an aftermarket "all metal" radiator, is going to be aluminum with plastic tanks.
Your radiator should have large round pins about 2-3 inches long manufactured on the bottom plastic tank. You should have something similar on the top tank. These are out near the ends facing downward. for the bottom tank and straight up for the top tank. coming off the lower core support, there should be places with holes and there should be large rubber grommets which fit into the holes and then the pins for the radiator, fit inside the center of the grommets. This way you have rubber isolating the plastic from touching metal.
At the top, there will be brackets which will have rubber rings which fit inside the brackets and the rings fit over each pin on the top radiator tank. The brackets then are bolted to the upper tie bar of the core support. You now have a radiator which is secured within the body of the car but has rubber mounts which keep it from touching metal. That is what keeps the radiator from getting damaged.
If your radiator is getting damaged other than that, if it is touching the body at any other point, the body has been damaged and needs to be repaired.
If the radiator is being blown apart from running hot, you need to have the cooling system checked or give me more input as to where the radiator is splitting. Is it splitting at the seems from heat?
