FL231. FUSE.... The RCA ITC22 chasis has a common problem. and it not all that difficult to repair. Does your rca projection tv have read blue and green shadows? Does it have bowing in affect on the top and bottom of picture? when you turn it on does some thin red green and blue line bow in from the top then go away. The main question to determine if you have the fl231 fuse problem is if you go into customer menu then setup do you have the "CONVERGENCE' option. If you do not. then i suspect you have this problem. In the manufactering of these sets Lead free solder is used. now there is great debate over the use of lead free. connection tend to be more brittle. cracks develop around the solder connections of the high voltage flyback transformer. this very small crack set up oscillations in the cuicit with a 400 milliamp fuse. THis fuse cant take it. When this fuse blows the processor then does not know its a projection tv with three projection tubes. it thinks its a crt tube tv. and crt tube tv dont need "convergence" so it removes the convergence from the set.
TO REPAIR... 1. Warning. this set can generate leathal dangerous voltages even unplug do not attempt if you have no experence with electronics.
2. Remove the back. there a number of torx 20 screws.
3. what you will see is a number of circit boards There will be one on the right and one on the left. the one on the right is the small signal board. the one on the left is called the power deflection board. it has a large black part with a big red or black wire coming from the top, this is the flyback.Next to the flyback on the right of it there will be three small rectangular componets tan or brown in color. these are fuses. the one in the middle is the fl231 fuse.
4. getting to this fuse can be difficult. these two cuicit boards sit on a tray that is removable. to remove this tray it is pulled out and up. BUt watch the wires.loosen the wire tyes.
5 when you get the tray up the bottom side of the board can be accessed
you will now have to unsolder that fuse. one side of this fuse is under a plastic part of the tray. i have found the easest way is to cut away the plastic to get to it. if you dont want to do this you will have to remove the board. only remove half of the plastic brace
6. REPLACE FUSE RCA PART 259213
7 RESOLDER FLYBACK CONNECTIONS simply heat up and add a little solder
8 reassemble set. make sure you examine the set for loose connections.
9 and remember "BE Careful'

Very important..... Remember to solder the flyback connection. I have seen this set come back to the shop every time if i didnt resolder these connections.

willtab,
You are the man! I printed out your instructions. Went to RadioShack got a in line automotive fuse holder # 270-1238 and fuse # 270-1047 (500 milliamp, they didn't have 400 in stock). Soldered it in place and touched up the flyback and WAM! it worked like a champ. Total cost.... $6.06 unbelievable! You made me look like a hero! My wife thought for sure the t.v. was done for. Thanks for saving my ****!

Hi,
This is a great article. I have replaced the fuse and re-soldered the flyback connections. When I plug the set in, I get the power light on the front of the TV comes on and then in about 2 sec it goes off and i hear a beeping sound that I think is coming from the flyback. This happens 3 times and then nothing. I see someone else has the same problem and I was wondering if there is a fix. Thanks in advance for any help possible...

Thank you so much for this helpful information. I studied your information and it was easy to follow the directions for repair. I was able to nibble a portion of the plastic away with my dykes to allow the easy removal/replacement of the bad fuse. I re-soldered the flyback transformer connections, and installed the new fuse. The TV has been working great now for over a month so I have to say that that the problem was fixed correctly. It saved us big bucks! And it convinced me to sign up here at fixya.
Big thanks to ya willtab! hope I can return the favor.
Sincerely - kc8iaq

We installed using your instructions and the convergence problem is fixed. However, now everyone is blue. Did we do something when we installed?

do i have to worry about getting zapped when resoldering the flyback transformer pins? Is it recommended to discharge the flyback first or should this not be of my concern?

I see you're not short on accolades, but here's one more. Though I would like to ask a small question.
After reading all you've posted on this bug, I used my DVM to check the condition of FL231, and well, got continuity, < 1 ohm. But the problem persisted. So..... being daring, I very carefully shorted the fuse legs with a clip lead and this resolved the problem. I sat in front of the TV for a while to make sure any built-in-smoke wasn't going to escape. After a half hour, I felt safe leaving it that way until my digi-key order came in. ( I lost the PN I had written down and threw away the packaging, but the same fuse can be easily found on digi-key with a little bit of searching.) Replaced the fuse today and everything's back to normal. I also resoldered the flyback transformer pins like you suggested. Thank you for this priceless knowledge you shared with me :o)

Hi I am having the convergence problem with the rca 52" projection. I checked continuity for the
FL231 Fuse and it tests fine. I soldered the flyback even though that looked ok as well. I now have the convergence option back on the tv but when you do he auto convergence the picture is still rainbowed. I i try to manually align the colors the cross hair target lines up but the words below arent fixed. If I try to eyeball it with the words then the cross hair is way off. Any ideas?

willtab,
Thank you for the advice. Just fixed my 3-year old Walmart RCA HD52W59 following your procedure. I didn't figure our how to tip the board tray untill I was finishing. I was sliding the tray to its travel limits and trying to lift. I removed the board from the tray instead of lifting the tray.
I used my trusty RCA WV-38A (a kit I assembled in 1964) to check fuses and diodes. The 400 ma fuse was the only problem found.
Vacuumed all I could get to and cleaned out all of the carbarized household dust around the high voltage I could reach with a small brush. Resoldered the flyback as you advised. Received the fuse today and the set is operating perfectly as I write. I ordered extra fuses because my daughter has one of these sets from Walmart and I think this will repeat. The high voltage stuff at the CRT's that I couldn't reach worries me.
Thank you for passing on the right stuff.

Thank you! I replaced the fuse with the part number you gave. It was $3 plus another $7 to ship (I don't understand that, but what the heck, $10 to fix my TV) I re-soldered the flyback as some of the soldered connections were obviously discolored. I also took your advice and cut a notch in the plastic brace so I didn't have to take the board out. It worked like a charm. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this information. We were able to fix the problem for less than $10. Found the part on E-Bay and received it fairly quickly. Was easy to replace following your guide. And I did resolder the flyback connections as well. Works great!!! Thank you very much. You are a guru!

This is great step by step, and it makes sense, but the problem is that I have a P52960 52" dated 2003, and I can't find the fuse that you're talking about. The only fuse I can find is F2401, right next to the 115VAC power cord. I found the flyback, looked to the right and still just the regular bus style fuse. Any idea if this model has the FL231 in another location or if the bus fuse replaced/was replaced by the FL231?
Thanks for any help you can give,
Devon Johnson

Thank you very much, I replaced the fuse and it blew again. If I did not read your comment I would of replace the fuse again. I called the Television Tech., he said I had to bring it in. Well I know now that I should try to resolder before replacing the Fuse. If I did not see your message I would of drove the television 200 mmiles to the shop. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Hello I read ur answer to the Fl 231 fuse problem in rca projection tvs. I have now actually replaced the fuse 3 times and it just blew again. Every other time i just lost the option in the menu and the screen bowed with the colors separating. this time its the same except that when it first happened it shut the tv off and tried to come back on 2 or 3 times unsuccessfully till i turned it off and waited now it comes on but i have the convergence problem. the tv is about 2.5 years old and blew the first fuse then the 1st replacement lasted about a week and a half. 2nd rep a few days and the most recent about 2 days. I have one more replacement left and wanted to check with you to see if theres anything you could maybe tell me as to the problem.
Thanks for your time, Id appreciate any help.

Do I need to discharge anything before I start taking the blown fuse off, or do I just need to make sure I try to stay away from the red wire.

I gotta tell you...oh boy... you saved me a bunch of money. Right now the U.S. economy sucks and thanks to Mr. Bush! (Mr. ******** to me). Been able to fix stuff myself is a pretty good damn deal right now. After following your instructions, well, I got my TV set working properly again. I'm so proud of myself and have no words enough to thank you. I'd never did soldering before and with an old PC mother board to trainning myself, I got it done! Advise: When you buy a soldering kit, please, also buy a desoldering kit. It makes much eisier. Once again, THANK YOU!

Wiltab, thanks for all the help, I got a quote of over $250 bucks to fix this problem. Instead I went to Radio Shack and picked up a soldering kit for $10... what a life saver.
I do have another question I will shoot you. The digital tuner also went out on the same tv. It is also removed from the options menu. I would figure it is a fuse as well???? Any help would be appreciated.

I replaced the fuse and the tv worked for nearly 20 minutes then it blew again. Luckly I bought spare fuses to replace but before I put in another one I need some clarification. Am I to understand the reason the fuse blows is because of the flyback? And if this is the reason do I just need to add solder to the existing flyback or do I need to remove all the old solder and then add all new solder? Once again the fuse did fix the t.v. but only shortly and I need to know what is blowing the fuse.

I just want to thank-you for this info. I was ready to trash my tv. I wrote RCA and cussed them good, too. I read a bunch of other articles and everybody had a different solution to the convergence problem. But yours made the best sense. So I lifted the circuit board out and jumped the two solders with some alligator clips to test the fl213 fuse and voila it works. Now I'm off to get me a new fuse and will resolder the flyback as suggested. I also cut off the plastic as you suggested so I could get access to it as it was a lot easier than taking the whole board out. Again, Thanks!
