loud chatter on start and rattle from timing chain area

The timing chain area also takes in the alternator and water pump. To isolate the source of the noise, use the old mechanics trick.

Place a 3 foot 1/4 inch brass rod against the flap at the opening of your ear and push until it closes. Place the other end of the rod against various engine components and listen. The noisy problem will conduct the noise up the rod to your ear and you can hear quite precisely where the problem is. Much safer than laying your ear all over a running engine.

You can also loosen the fan belt and run the engine without alternator or water pump (briefly) to see how that affects the problem. Chatter on start makes me think of starter and Bendix gear problems. Sounds like a 2 person diagnostic team to me; one to start the car and one to listen and probe.

Don't know if Subaru Forrester has an engine that has valve interference at piston Top Dead Center. If it is and the timing chain breaks, you are looking at major $$ to recover.

hi our dishwasher isn't emptying. i have remove pipes and checked for blockages. is there a pump that pumps out the water? thanks Duncan

Yes tyhere is a pump that pumps the water out. Sounds like the pump has failed. Make sure to have the model number and serial number of the machine when you call to have it serviced. Since you have taken it apart already, this might be a repair you can do. Remember, unplug the unit before attempting any repairs

I hear a knocker sound near the water pump, what is the problem

The water pump bearings can go bad. Look for the belt to begin moving laterally or chatter on the water pump pulley. You may also see metal shavings beneath it.
If it is, change the water pump. It is a rather simple and inexpensive but important fix.

grinding noise from passenger side engine

The water pump bearings could be going out and they will make a grinding noise. The water pump doesn't always leak when the bearings are going out.

does a fuel pump make a grinding noise while idiling

fuel pump noises vary from model to model however, it should be a smoth humming or steady sound at idle not a grinding or pulsing sound. A inexpensive way to improve your fuel system is to replace the fuel filter. This is relatively inexpensive and can save wear and tear on your fuel pump. Remember, if you do replace a fuel pump always replace the fuel filter and make sure that you replace the fuel strainer. A plugged fuel filter can quickly ruin a fuel pump. I also recommend flushing the fuel tank if the old fuel strainer has more than very small amounts of rust or dirt.
