Tip & How-To about Linksys Computers & Internet

Failed Internet Connection

There are times you may have to unplug your router for a minimum of 30 seconds to restore a connection. Most of the time this works. Most current routers do not have this issue but many of the legacy routers still have this problem in losing connections.

There is sort of a universal reset for routers known as 30/30/30.

The trick to this fix is to KEEP HOLDING the reset button in the ENTIRE TIME. Do not release button until ALL steps are done.

Make sure the router is plugged in and ON. Press and hold the reset button in for 30 seconds. UNPLUG from wall (keep holding button in) and wait ANOTHER 30 seconds of hold time. PLUG BACK IN and continue to hold button in ANOTHER 30 seconds. Then release.

I have this HUGE PROBLEM with my Encore Router. I bought a Blackbery Curve 8520 and i need to access the internet through our own wifi. The Mobile says i have to enter a Pin number to the router for it to work. My problem is that i dont know where to type in the Pin Number to the Router. I really need help, this is serious. Thanks!

You probably need to reset your router.

Some people don't realize that pressing a router's reset button for just a second or two may do nothing. Depending on the type of router and its current state (including the nature of any problems it may have), you may need to hold down the button longer. Networking enthusiasts have developed this so-called 30-30-30 hard reset procedure that should fully reset any home router to its default settings at any time. Follow these steps to perform a router hard reset:

    1. when the unit is powered on, hold down its reset button for 30 seconds
    2. while still holding down the reset button, unplug the router from power and hold for an additional 30 seconds
    3. still holding down the reset button, turn on power to the router again and hold for 30 more seconds
After this process (a total of 90 seconds) is complete, your router should be restored to itsfactory default state. Note that your particular router may not require the full 30-30-30 procedure. For example, some routers can at times be hard reset after only 10 seconds and without power cycling. Nevertheless, I still recommended memorizing this 30-30-30 rule as a general guideline.

my router will not reset how can i get to reset and get the internet back up and runing

Thank you for your question.

To reset this router; i would recommend an unfolded paper clip or pen. When you examine the back of this device, you will see a pin-hole that has the words 'reset' embossed into the plastic. IT's a very tiny hole.

Press that button with the pen or paperclip. While holding it in, unplug the device then plug back in. Hold it a minimum of 30 seconds; and do it a second time. This should get it to reset.

The WRT56G likes to act up. It may be useful to check out www.linksys.com and update the "firmware" according to the website instructions to avoid future issues.
