How to fix loud hum and no heating in Sharp model R-308KW?

Hi,
There could be a variety of reasons why this happens, but the likeliest
reason is the secondary interlock or monitor switch is broken. These are micro switches that tell the microwave that the door is closed. If this switch is broken, then the microwave thinks the door is still open and the carousel table won't turn, and the oven will not heat up.
I replaced an interlock switch last Saturday. The switch was $7.00 and took me an hour.
Ask your local repair person to test the interlock and monitor switches first, then go from there.
Good luck,
Hank

i think i have a short in my microwave. its

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man.
Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

it does not get hot

Hi, Unfortunately there are several things that can cause no heat.

1. The High Voltage Capacitor
2. Power Diode
3. Magnetron
4. Control Board
5. Door interlock
6. High temp cut off temp sensor
Most of the time it is either the Capacitor or Power Diode that fails. These two are not expensive repairs. Actually 1,2, 5 & 6 are reasonable repairs.

3 & 4 will cost at least 50% of the replacement cost of the unit.

I still think you will get off with a reasonable repair expense.

The Diode and Capacitor can be found here:

A repair person may opt to modify the diode installation to a less expensive diode that will still work normally with no danger. I.e. a $23.00 Diode vs a $53.00 Diode. Same electrical function.

7871S Combi died last week - big flash, smell of acrid burning, tripped main circuit breaker. Took it into local repairer and I'm told that the main motherboard has fused along with the two boards for the displays -cost of repair £850! I have phoned neff and the parts come to £500. Disappointing that a 7 yr old unit is an economic write off. Any thoughts. Thx.

that a sign of the times we live in ... fortunatly that kind of failure is rare but its seems like such a waste to just throw things away ... but thats also showing us the power of our technology to make things .. we often can actually make an entire product for less than it cost to repair .. thats not a fault of the product but a tribute to modern manufacturing .. a few advantages in buying new are that likely the product has improved in reliability, efficiency and safety over 7 years .. a manufacturer may not even want their older product to survive forever without safety improvements they may now incorporate .. and there is no profit in a product that lasts forever but there is lots of profit in reputation .. so if there were lots of failures then a reputable company hopefully would try to do something about it .. if there were only a few out of millions then, its a shame, but thats disposable.... considering the complexity of todays microwave ovens its remarkable that they are so affordable .. in fact its hard to believe that such a useful and normally reliable device can be purchased for so little... still it would be nice if a manufacturer provided reasonable service on their products if for no other reason than to reduce pollution ... the cost of repairs is often greater than the highly efficient manufacturing process .. are we willing to pay more for repairs just to save the world .. nice thought but i doubt it .. and if the "toss out" rate is low enough maybe its a moot point .. now even if the thing is burned up there are people with knowlege of those things that can make good use of them ... either for spare parts to repair other units or they may be able to repair yours with parts from another .. if you can find one of those people you can profit .. or if you just donate your old unit to goodwill or other charity then chances are those knowlegable people will find your donations and make it useful again for someone that cant afford new ... the charity makes a little money and there is less waiste .. you get a new improved unit, someone makes a little profit and everyone is happy ... still doesnt it just seem wrong to have so many thing "disposable"

Frigidaire Microwave problem

You did not provide a model number, so I am unable to offer any brand specific information. I can offer a probable solution based on the description of your complaint.

My Solution is:
You may have had some grease or other debris build up on what is called a "waveguide cover", which is used in all models and brands. The microwave has to pass through this cover to get into the oven cavity. Any grease build up on it will start burning and sparking as the cover deteriorates. This cover can sometimes be consumer replaceable. I would recommend that you have a technician check this out for safety reasons. I am unable to quote any rates or prices due to the lack of information but I think it would be cheaper than replacing the unit.

Please show your appreciation by rating my solution.
Thank you,
Dave E. (Illeagle)
