Laptop not charging

Hello there,

My dear friend, there are basically three things to check on this laptop if it tends not to charge. Which are the charger, the battery and the laptops charging connection port.

You need to test them to find out which is faulty, it might be one of them or two or all. carry out the following test on them.

Try to charge the laptop using another charger to see if that will charge it. If it charges it, then it means your charger is bad and need to be replaced. Then try to use your charger on another laptop to confirm if it truly is a problem with the charger. If the charger does not work, then all you have to do is to replace it with a new one, but if it charges, it means it is some other component that is faulty. If you charger is faulty, have it checked to know if it is a bad capacitor that needs to be replaced if it is not, then replace the charger with a new one.

Next to test is the battery, if the laptop comes on when you plug the charger in, and the laptop works normally but as soon as the charger is disconnected it goes off, then it means the battery is bad and is not holding a charge. Try to insert the battery into another laptop to see if it will work there, then try to charge it there to see if it will hold a charge. If it does not, that confirms the battery problem and the solution to that is for you to replace the battery as there is not way to have it fixed.

Then finally, the charging connection port, that sometimes gives a fault when there is a high voltage that hits the laptop when connected to the power supply. To confirm this, have a well tested charger connected to the laptop, to see if it will charge, if it does not charge that confirms it, but if it does, then it means the connection port is okay. But if it is not working, then it means the port needs to be replaced and that needs a very careful process for it to be repaired.

Hope this was helpful to you.

It could be one of these three things.
1. Bad port. Often in laptops these ports become loose.
2. Bad battery.
3. Bad charger.

Borrowing either a universal power charger, or the charger from someone with a similar laptop, can eliminate some of the possibilities unless it is indeed your charging port.

If after plugging it in, the battery charges you know you had a bad charger. If the battery fails to charge, you know its time for a new battery. Again this only if the port itself is not bad.

Universal chargers can be expensive. You can find batteries and chargers on Ebay for a decent price.

it sounds like one of three things:

1. Battery itself no longer functions
2. Laptop Charger has inadequate amperage
3. The motherboard is defective (most likely).

If you have another battery, or a friend with the same battery, you can try that first (and someone else's laptop charger).

If the problem is the motherboard, you can try to have it repaired but I don't trust many companies to do this kind of work. I outsource my motherboard jobs to a company called Laptop Rescue
(http://www.laptoprescue.com/laptop-repair-2/). Coincidentally, they also sell laptop chargers in case that's the problem. Hopefully it's just a charger or battery issue and not a motherboard.

Very poor battery life, have to keep it plugged into mains almost all the time. This is after less than 3 years old, probably nearer 2.

Hello there,

Yes my dear friend, the battery is bad already that is why it seems like you have to get it plugged into the mains all the time when you are using the laptop.

The battery tends to last for over three years, but there are some things that gets to drain the life cycle of the battery.

Things like, plugging the laptop when ever it is in use. Once the battery is full, one needs to get it unplug it from the mains and use the battery till it is low before connecting the charger back on it. That way, the battery will last a while before the cells die off. As constant charge gets to weaken the battery cells and therefore makes the battery weak and unable to hold a charge.

The battery can also get bad if the voltage used to charge it is very high. High voltage tends to kill the battery cells also.

Some times, the battery could last for over three years and at times less that. The cells in the battery could get weak at any time. So I will advice you get another battery and this time, take caution on how you get to charge the battery.

Hope this was helpful to you.

Laptop batteries power a laptop when it is not connected to an electrical outlet. If the laptop battery fails to charge when the laptop is plugged into an electrical outlet, the battery is likely dead and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately there is no way to fix a dead battery. However, while a dead battery is the likely cause, it is not the only cause. The AC adapter may be broken, in which case the battery won't charge, or the battery contacts may be dirty and need cleaning. Prior to replacing the battery, perform simple tasks to ensure a dead battery is the cause of the problems.
1. Power down the laptop. Gently pull the AC adapter from the side of the laptop for removal.
2. Place the laptop in front of you, bottom side up. Locate the battery release mechanism. This can be a button that slides or needs to be pushed to unlock or release the laptop battery from the housing unit. Press or slide the mechanism. Slide or lift the battery from the battery bay for removal.
3. Insert the AC adapter into the side of the laptop. Power on the laptop. If the laptop does not power on, ensure the AC adapter is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet. If the electrical outlet is working and the laptop won't power on, the AC adapter is not properly working and needs to be replaced. Remove the AC adapter.
4. Dip a cotton swab in a small amount of rubbing alcohol. The cotton swab should be damp, not dripping wet. Lightly rub the dampened cotton swab onto the battery contacts and battery bay contacts to remove dust, buildup and grime. Allow the contacts to air dry.
5. Align the battery over the battery bay. Either press or slide into place. A clicking or snapping noise produced from the locking mechanism will confirm the laptop battery is securely locked into place.
6. Install the AC adapter. Allow the AC adapter to fully charge the battery for 8 hours.
7. Remove the AC adapter. Power on the laptop. If the laptop does not power on, the battery needs to be replaced.
I hope you find it very helpful.

my laptop charging port is not working properly. My Charger is running properly but the charging port of the laptop is not working. It is not getting charged. Now the laptop is totally off and now i cant start the laptop also. What to do? I have checked my laptop charger with other friend's laptop it is running. But also My laptop is not getting charged with my friend's charger. I have no idea what to do. Please help me.

Hello,

There are three possible parts of the computer which cause the problem.

1. ac adapter or charger
2. battery
3. motherboard

The charger is working fine which leaves the battery and the motherboard to be the possible reasons for that certain problem. What you need to do is to check which one is really the part that's causing the problem.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Remove the battery from the laptop.
2. Turn the computer by using the charger alone. If it turns on then, the battery needs to be replaced. If it doesn't then it's a motherboard problem which is a very complicated situation. You need to see a computer technician for a motherboard problem.
