Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

What is wrong when your refrigerator make a heavy buzz sound followed by a click and wont cool

Hello,
Is that buzzing/click you hear from the compressor area?
If it is from their, the relay on the compressor has gone out, OR the compressor is locked up.To determine which of those it is the amprage draw using a amp meter clamped to the wire on the overload thermostat where the relay is, must be measured, if 17 or higher amps the compressor has locked up, if its around 5 or so the relay has gone out and replacing both relay and overload will fix it.If the compressor has locked that is a major repair and may cost up to $1200

My refrigerator/freezer is making a sharp buzzing noise followed by a loud click. Its been doing this every few minutes for a while, and now today, everything in my freezer appears to be defrosting.

I hear a buzz sound for 5 seconds when compressor starts.

The grommet simply holds the start relay in place.  Unless it is torn, you won't need it.  Likely the start relay.  The buzzing is possibly the relay contacts on the start relay burning if the problem occurs when the compressor starts...although it could be the compressor making noise as well.  You might try to "hear it out".  The start relay gives a boost to the compressor by adding in another winding inside to 'kick' the compressor.
If all you hear is the buzz, you might just wait a bit to see what fails!

Kenmore (253.51399104)side by side making buzzing/humming noise

It will rattle slightly, this is normal. The ones that are burned out will sound like they have gravel in them, you can defininely tell something is wrong.
The problem with diagnosing Kenmore fridges with this problem is that there are different manufacturers. Yours is built by Frigidaire and probably has a Tecumseh compressor. We find more failed compressors with the Tecumsehs than we do with the models that have Embraco compressors. The models with Embraco's generally have more relay failures.

You should not hear the buzz/hum at startup. You will need to replace the compressor, which will be replaced at no charge to you if it is less than 5 yrs old.
If it is older than 5 yrs, you can have it replaced, but it will be almost as expensive as a new fridge. You can buy an aftermarket start device called a 3-in-1. This has a start capacitor built in to give it a little more boost on start up. I don't recommend using them unless it is a short term fix until the compressor can be replaced or if it is out of warranty and there is nothing to lose anyway.
Thanks/Mike
