I have changed the sparkplug and it has oil and gas but won't start. Any recommendations on how to fix or what to troubleshoot?
Noticed the starting bar seems to not be as tight as before (I am referring to the bar you hold near the handle while starting and operating).
Sounds like you need a complete tuneup. Start with the carb. then clean all coil contacts, air filter and this will start you in the right direction. Good luck.

I have a yard machines mtd 18hp 46" cut riding lawn mower with automatic transmission. When I shift into gear it makes a noise and will not move. What could be the problem? Is there a way to check transmission fluid?
The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides

I press the red button on the mower and pull the Recoil starter and it starts up great and then dies. My mower is a Yard Machines by MTD 21" Rear and Side discharge Mulching Mower Model Series 540..Help!
If it's a briggs engine, sounds like you have water / debris in your carb fuel bowl. Using spray carb cleaner will only work if you remove the bowl and clean the carb jets. Also, you could have water in the gas tank as well. First, remove your air filter, then remove the 3 screws that attach your filter bracket to your carburator and mower. Take off your fuel line at the carb and drain all your gas into a clear jar. If it looks very yellow, cloudy, or see water in the bottom of the jug, change your gas. Using a half inch socket wrench, after gas line is disconnected, remove the fuel bowl and clean with carb cleaner. Also, examine the bolt you just removed. There are 2 jets in the side and one at the end. Using the carb cleaner, make sure they are clean as well. Use the carb cleaner extension tube to spray up inside the bottom center of the carb, where the bolt threads, to clean that area as well. After all this make sure ur float assembly is intact and reassemblt the bowl to the carb and reattach the the fuel line. finish bt reattaching the air filter support bracket makinf sure the gasket between the carb and the bracket isn't damaged.

My lawn mower makes a chugging sound when it's running.
It runs fine for a second, then sounds like it's going to die, then it revs back up, then almost dies again, etc.
I tried changing the plug, oil, air filter, and gas, but still won't run smoothly.
better late than never, I have the same mower
there is no throttle control on these mowers, if you look under the air filter the throttle is balanced by a spring pulling in one direction and a lever controlled by engine speed. if the spring breaks or falls off the lever will wiggle back and forth, more gas if the engine slows, less if it speeds up. you end up going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.
The tension spring slows the switching down and smooths out the engine speed.

I have a yard man 139cc OHV mower and I am not sure how to get the spark plug off. The spark plug boot will not come off so I can check it.
On the 139cc PowerMore, I had a similar problem with the metal jacketed Spark Plug boot. Immediately behind the spark plug boot on the left side is a larger bolt head. Grab the boot and pull away from the motor with one hand while gently applying pressure with a slot ***** diver or a handle on a pair of pliers, using the bolt head as your pivot point and get the boot off that way. Work gently, you don't want to damage an air fin or anything else, but do know it will take a strong but short tug off of that spark plug. Also, take note that the spark plug sits in there at an angle, that way you don't cross-thread anything.
Be firm, but patient with this and it'll work out.

oil change in yard man lawn mower. i am unable to find a drain plug
Some mowers are designed to drain oil out of the dipstick tube. remove dipstick and tilt the mower to allow oil to run out into a drain pan. 2/3 rds of a quart or 20 oz is what to expect.

I have a masport 4 stroke mower with briggs and stratton motor. I'm wanting to do 1st oil change and retailer suggested I should use bottom outlet for first change to get rid of all metal filings etc. what tool do I use to loosen the bottom outlet. it appears oil will go all over the place. would it be easier to take the blade assembly off as well. How do I do that?
More than likely the plug will come out with a ratchet or breaker bar from a socket set. On most machines the plugs are plastic so you do not want to over-tighten when re-installing.
Before changing the oil, get your equipment lined up. A good way to change the oil is to get a some auto jackstands or similar item to get the mower up on the air, leaving an open access on the bottom to get your ratchet into the underside. Put down cardboard or other absorbent material under the mower. You will need a pan to catch the oil. There will be less than a quart in there, so any small, flat pan will work. You probably would not have to take the blade off.
Start the mower and run it for a few minutes to get the oil warm and all the sediment worked up in the crank case. Then, put the mower up on the stands or supports you have set up. Put the pan under the mower, as close to being under the plug as you can get. Loosen the plug with the ratchet, then remove it by hand.
Remember to dispose of the used oil properly.

The mower starts OK in choke mode, but cuts out after a few seconds. If I start it in fast mode, it sometimes fixes the problem for a while. The engine also stutters a lot so it seems like there might be a problem with the fuel pump?
First thing to check is the air filter. It may be plugged.

my mountfield petrol lawnmowers pull cord has gone into the spool and will not come back out so i am unable to start the machine.
I'm going to link you to my two favorite "How-To" videos. Depending on your machine, one of these will show you enough to do it yourself. Once you do one, You'll be a pro. Just make sure you use enough rope and do not wind the spring too tight or you'll break it;
