Check that your drive belt is tensioned correctly, not worn and free from oil.
The blade height is also critical blades set to high can affect the relationship between blade and roller height .
And probably the most common fault is sap build up on the table which makes the thicknessing table sticky, use a ptfe spray this will help.

What width staples go in this gun ?

I have a box of T50 staples here labeled 5/16 , 8mm, but they are too narrow when dropped in to the channel in the stapler.
