The problem is most likely a failing electrolytic capacitor in the convergence section of the circuitry. It may not be economically repairable. You can (after unplugging the set) take a good look at all the electrolytic capacitors hunting for signs --crud on the ends, bulging, burning, etc.

Before you do the auto search for the programmes please try to do the factory re set from set up menu. hope your problem will be solved.

At first, check if battery contacts inside the battery compartment for any dust of rust accumulated. Clean them well, and insert fresh batteries and check. Check its infrared emission. You can check it by using a cellphone with camera option. If there is no infrared emission, you have to check its infrared LED at the front of the remote control for damage or loose solder terminals. Ok after over a year i figured out it was the tcon board. Good luck getting finding one. The first one i ordered from shopjimmy was faulty, didn't realize until after the warranty so i ate the cost of it (honestly i thought that it was good and there was another thing wrong with the tv) so i said wtf and bought one last week from ebay. Bam! it works great!!!

Look first to see if same issue on all inputs to set---does it do this with a DVD etc hooked to a rear input or not?

what is being used for signal and how are you connected for that?

sounds like a bad main or digital board--you under warranty with this unit?

These trouble is commonly caused by a rusty or dirty switch. It is easily to determine what switch, try to check the power switch or replace a new one. When replacing a switch open the back cover of your tv, try to locate the power switch by looking for the power button, It is connected in a small pcb together with the volume and channel button it is separated to the main pcb connected with a wire.

You can search eBay. They sometime show up there. If you know the part number that can help also. Look for stand.

I have the same tv model KDL-40W4100 and around the same age. At the moment I have 16 of
these horizontal lines over the entire screen and they seem to be grouped into 2 lines per row. They are also around 4 inches and two pixel rows high. I have been looking over the Internet for months and found nothing to troubleshooting this issues. In the last few weeks more and more of these groups of lines have been showing up and now i am up to 16 of them and it is becoming unwatchable. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I also attached a picture to describe it better. Thanks!

if the video looks like it is dark on the one side and you can see image retention(ghost image of previous image after picture changes) and all inputs and menus are distorted then you most likely have an LCD panel failure and when it comes to repair unless you were able to get warranty coverage the repair would not be economical due to the cost of the LCD panel. i suggest contacting sony customer support for possible repair accomodation 1(800)222-7669

That is more likely to be caused by bad T-CON board or bad connection between the LCD panel and the T-CON board ribbon cable connections. I would try reseating the ribbon cables between the T-CON and LCD panel first, you may even have to use contacts cleaner to clean the contacts.
Otherwise the T-CON may have to be replaced.

Or www.digikey.com, just make sure to use caps with low ESR, 105c, high ripple current and long life rating such as PANASONIC FM or FC series. Please post back what you find. My KDL-52W4100 just started doing the same thing. It blurs down the right side of the screen, then goes back to normal after it warms up. Does anyone know whats up with this?

This appears to be an repair issue.
We are experiencing the same problems. No matter what setting we use for the 40EX500, the close captioning does not seem to come on or off.
We have a HD receiver which has a setting to disable or enable. Setting to enable allows CC to be seen on the TV, but it cannot be turned off or on with the CC button on the Sony Remote. Disabling the box, then disables the CC completely on the TV.
I do not know what the issue is, and calling Sony directly is a waste of time, the holding times are unacceptable.
