I am sorry if this
I would try and clean the contact leads to the battery first with rubbing alcohol then after it dries I would try the battery again if it does the same thing then it is a battery problem and you can purchase a new one, it sounds like it is not the camera.

Press cursor-left (marked with a one-handed clock). Use the cursor keys to select the desired self-timer mode and press SET.
Full details are in the "Using the Self-timer" section of the manual (page 53 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one at

Put a new or another memory card in the camera and recheck.
If it gives the same problem, the camera needs probably maintenance / repair.
Dear FixYa
I have a Canon
I had this happen on a rebel about 3 years ago. I did have to send it in to get it repaired as it was a hardware issue. I believe Canon swaps out one board. Mine did the same thing but more randomly than yours is doing. I also went through the firmware upgrades and resets as you have with little or no improvement.
I need the manual
Easy one ;-]
Go to www.canon.com or you local version ie canon.ca click on the "support and drivers". Look for or search for your camera to find its support page. On it will be a downloads link which will have software and all the manuals.
This should take you to your support page on the Canadian site. The manual will be the same unless you grab the french version ;-]

Those are a nice camera. My daughter has worn out a few of them over the years.

You should check if the battery is already expired. There are times when even if it is charging, the indicator is no longer reliable especially if the battery has gone pass its expected life.

Having gone over two months without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to use a card reader solved the problem.

I hear similar problem almost from a Canon 350D (Rebel XT). They found it was purely a mechanical issue as to how the "catch/release"
on the "pop-up" works and perhaps being slightly out of alignment.
Also, I found it could be overcome by a bit of assistance by moving the
"pop-up" slightly to the right and/or left at the moment you press the
"pop-up" button. 300D. With some little assistance the flash would pop up. You could comtemplating to put a small burst of WD40 spray.

It is possible you are trying to focus on somethind that is either completly white or completely black. It has trouble focusing in the dark as well. make sure your auto focus point (The red dots in your view finder is in the centre. you can move the red dot with the button on top of your camera that looks like 4 squares. simply look through your viewfinder push the shutter button down half way and the red dot should flash. if it isn't in the centre then move it with the button on top (4 squares) and try again until you get it in the centre.
Wont auto focus. Not sure why
There is a button to the side on your lens that says AF/MF. You are probably on MF (manual focus). Switch it and you should be fine! Hope this helps!

Hello.
Reinstall the program into your mac.
If that doesn't fix it, then you might have a corrupted file(s) stored in your camera. You will gonna have to format your SD card using your camera.
NOTE: All the files in your camera will be deleted if you format your SD card!
You may still transfer the files from your camera before formatting it by directly using the SD card and inserting it into a card reader. If your Mac doesn't have a bult in card reader, then you can just purchase a portable card reader which costs around $5-$15.

What you can try is this. Turn the camera off. Remove the lens.
Put the lens back on, turn on the camera. note any messages.
You should read your manual.
You may be set in manual mode on the camera or the lens or check both.
Make sure that the camera is set to auto lens in menus and on the camera, if it has a setting on the outside.
Make sure, if the lens is AUTO, to set the switch to auto.
Hope it works.

Optical focus relies on a gear driven motorized system to focus the lens. It sounds like the drive is either frozen by a foreign object (it doesn't take much) has gotten into the system, or a tooth has worn/broken on the gearing.
Try taking the lens off and blowing the camera out with some canned air. If that doesn't do it, it's a trip to the repair center.
